Bungalows / Storage

Went to view a dorma bungalow at the weekend however it has a huge lack of storage. There is a shed in the garden and good built in wardrobes but not a
lot else. We would have to use a downstairs bedroom as utility and find some clever storage solutions. Obviously we would offer as a 3 bed not a 4. Has anyone bought similar? Has it worked out?

If there i a garage, then this helps solve your problem provided you don't park the car in it of course.
We have all our coats, shoes, towels, linen etc stacked away in cupboards in there.

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:23

Forgot that part… no garage either!! Garden isn’t big enough for a second shed. The utility will be quite large so could house coats . Linen etc. iIt’s quite a downsize so I’m having a wobble!! Was thinking of swapping all the beds to ottomans?

You can't just knock the price down by one bedroom because your intended use is different.

bellac11 · 02/10/2023 13:36

I never exactly know what people mean by this, what storage, apart from under stairs cupboard/airing cupboard or purpose built utility room (and not all houses have these things) do people have in a house for storage

Surely you buy wardrobes, cupboards, chests, units etc to store things?

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:40

The house has been remodelled and is minimalist. I’m thinking storage for Suitcases, Christmas Tree/Decs that sort of thing. I don’t want stuff everywhere!

Maybe buy a different property that has more potential for storage? It doesn't sound like the right property for you.

I would imagine there will be storage in the eaves for things like this (ie loft storage for Christmas tree etc, not ideal for stuff in constant use).

But bungalows that have been converted by putting former bedrooms upstairs often have a lot of compromises.

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:43

Sorry probably worded it wrongly. The 4th room is office/ 4th but the property lacks a utility. For a remodel I find this weird, am quite happy to offer a price and walk away - it’s at the top end of the market without the garden/ utility or space to justify . I’m aware it would other some wouldn’t have an issue with it

Doesn't it have any kind of under-eaves storage? My parents have a dormer bungalow and they still have a large loft space, as well as a "cupboard under the stairs".

This.

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:44

Yes this has gone into the roof so all that has gone. Annoying as the house despite me sounding like I’m picking faults is fabulous. May look at a big yellow storage!

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:46

Its all gone - open plan galleried hall, no eaves. It’s a fabulous property though so trying to find a work around 🤣

I think if you buy this place, you will need to become minimalist yourselves. Otherwise you'll be frustrated all the time.
My house has shitloads of storage, and it is all full! Even daft things like board games & jigsaws, overflow of kitchen stuff, hobby kit, animal boxes. Saving children's stuff for GC! So much stuff but I am glad we have it.

Cheeesus · 02/10/2023 13:47

It sounds like it needs a load of built in storage adding.

It must have a loft, thats wherre all those things are in our house

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/10/2023 13:48

Why not ask the sellers where they store stuff like suitcases and Christmas tree etc as you couldn't see any decent storage.

bellac11 · 02/10/2023 13:49

Sorry, just seen no loft!

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:50

I think this is where it’s at - probably with a big yellow storage facility nearby 🤣

@Alltheshoes74 I think a small storage unit close to home would work but even a small one is often £120 a month- but if everything else is great it may be worth it

Fwendi · 02/10/2023 13:51

I moved in July from a much larger house to a 4 bed bungalow. I didn't think I'd need 4 beds so have had 1 bed converted to a guest toilet and a utility.

I thought I'd been ruthless when packing to move - but evidently not ruthless enough! I've made sure to design the utility with lots of cupboard and drawer space, 2 of the bedrooms I'm going to fit out with ikea storage, and I'm going to have the loft boarded. I'm also going to get lots of bookshelves built into the hallway but at a high level so they don't impact on hallway space.

I'm going to replace the existing shed with a bigger one, and probably next year I'll look into getting a garden room. If you don't have room for a bigger shed, how about one of those outdoor bunker type things?

Would any of the above work for you?

Alltheshoes74 · 02/10/2023 13:51

They are using the 4th bedroom - they’ve remodelled it, suspect they are flipping it so it’s very much staged to sell.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 02/10/2023 13:51

It's weird if there really is none. We have our attic converted and each room then has its own "attic" as well.

Fwendi · 02/10/2023 13:52

Forgot to say that I've bought new beds too, and they're all ottoman beds.

MaybeSmaller · 02/10/2023 13:53

Minimalist, open plan layouts are great until you realise you need storage for stuff...

TBH if you're really set on the property, don't want to get rid of your stuff, and don't want to add a lot of free standing storage (whether that's shelves, containers, or cupboards, or storage under beds), then you'll have to look at renting some sort of self storage. Not as convenient or cheap as having a loft you can shove your Christmas decorations into, but needs must.

SuddenlyOld · 02/10/2023 13:55

We're going from a 3 bed house to a 2 bed bungalow and will have loads more space
