Glass roof vs velux

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has advice on glass roof vs velux windows - especially in term of cost.
We are doing a side return extension with pitched roof and we're intending to have a 1.9x1.9m area of glass roof (pitched). However we didn't realise that this was different to normal aluminium glazing, until the window people put us right today! I have no idea about cost!

It will be tricky to fit velux into this space though, as they seem to come in fixed sizes, and there isn't room to have them side by side with a foot of ceiling in between (sorry for describing this badly!).

The roof is east facing and will only get direct sun for up to an hour in the morning due to buildings shading it, so not worried about it getting too hot.
Thank you!

Im not sure why you cant have velux a foot apart ? If you building the roof from scratch you can have them as far apart/ exactly where you want them .

Unless your builder has experience with glass roof installs you are better off going with the price of the glass as an supply and fit.
When pricing
The velux that you are looking at is designed to fit under tile on the wood "joist" when installed by the roofer. You need to add in the cost of install and other materials. You will also have to sheet and finish the interior celing so that is a hidden cost (saving).

Good luck

That picture looks beautiful but velux will be cheaper and you can open them. Great for food smells.

Have you thought about a) how you'll clean it and b) how you'll erect scaffolding to access the guttering/roof on that side of the house in the event that maintenance is needed.

Thanks for everyone's replies!
We can't fit 2 veluxes as it's only 1.9m, also they would let in a lot less light, which was one of the objectives of the build.
Thanks @AnSolas , that is helpful. Is there a lot of extra skill involved compared to a normal skilled roofer?
Re cleaning, it is only 1st floor height so shouldn't be too tricky? Also as east facing and not in direct sun so hopefully the dust won't show up too obviously (fingers crossed)!! Good point about the guttering, I will think on it ...

I am going to insult some builders but small jobs need jack-of-all trades rather than master of one so if the builder is not subcontracting the crew will not be "roofers"

Part of the selection will be product design and part labour costs. With any job the more times its done the better the installer becomes at it.

Like any product which has been around for a while Velux products are designed to be easy to install. And have been around long enough to have seen product and install failures and design these out of the current version of their product. The glass roof product you are buying may be a great design which is easy to install so the sales team can advise on that.

If your builder has not used the product before they are learning how to install on your job and need to read and follow the instructions etc. Simple stuff like specialist screws and waterproofing can end up being very expensive if bought for a single job.

Think of it as installing new kitchen cupboards you buy the boxes and doors and dont price in expensive door hinges or buying drill or a long level and it takes you time to go to the store and buy "stuff" this the fitter has all that "stuff" and the experience of having done installs before.

The one thing you would need to be clear about is the responsibility of each business. if you go with a glass install and the builder fits what happens if it leaks.

Just put one bigger velux in ,you can get them in a lot of different styles an sizes, you would have very little ceiling and almost as much light.

They are easy to install and will be much cheaper than a whole glass roof, you can also spin them open and clean them from inside.

I would go also with something like this - especially if not too big and not directly under the sun as you say, and particularly is the pitch is pronounced or part of a side return as here.
