Triple glazing/shutters

Does anyone have shutters for noise reduction? Moved to a main road and it's so loud.
Triple glazing might be better but the cost might be a blocker.
Shutters quoted are maple - will they block out some of the noise? Thanks

What sort of shutters? I had Louvred shutters (also sometimes called plantation shutters) and they had zero effect on noise- they are completely open to the room at the top (we weren’t on a busy road but we could hear exactly what we heard before).

They are at least an inch thick so I thought it would offer something in the way of noise reduction..

Yes these are like the ones we had- there’s a gap of an inch at the top between the shutter and the window so noise can just travel through. Plus the smaller gaps in the louvres themselves. I have heard that secondary glazing works better than double glazing so that might be worth a thought (adding a separate pane of glazing inside the window- something like magnaglaze).

We have internal shutters. They aren't designed for noise reduction really, as they have gaps where the shutters themselves meet. Obviously, as they are just really pieces of wood that open and close.

We had to have our bay window double glazing replaced due to age. Only cost a couple of hundred £ more for triple as opposed to double.

Now that makes a difference to noise intrusion!!

Just avoid some of the big companies, find someone local. Better value, better service.

Thanks all. I have a rather useless Juliette balcony facing a main road. The noise is horrendous. Didn't notice it when I viewed the place. It's a new build - you'd think they would have triple glazed :(
One of the other new home buyers is thinking of pushing back to the house builders. Do you think they would do anything?
Different thread, I suppose.

Should say - I didn't realise how busy the road was (always viewed during the day outside of rush) and also there are two or three big trees in front of the building, so not like it's plonked directly on a main road.

Louvred blinds aren’t designed to cut out noise- when I had them previously I didn’t notice any effect on noise. Ikea sell sound absorbing curtains, they’ll be much cheaper, it might be worth giving those a go? They probably won’t cut out as much sound as triple glazing but I imagine they’ll help a bit.

I would put secondary glazing over the current windows -i think that would make more difference than double or triple glazing. It can look good and be unobtrusive.

We had this issue when we moved to a main road. Viewed in lockdown so didn’t appreciate how loud it was. But we moved to an old house and replaced the old windows with acoustic double glazing I think. Made a big difference.

Thinking of also adding secondary glazing to one room. Secondary glazing isn’t actually expensive and I think is the best for noise.

Not sure where you’re based but if near London I can inbox you the secondary glazing company I got a quote from. They had great reviews. Hope you’re not too worried about the noise. Now we are settled it’s completely fine.

We’ve got triple glazing. It is basically silent in our house - no noise from outside whatsoever. Expensive though….

Thanks @Beachwaves127 that would be helpful.
I've been looking into acoustic curtains as well, and they seem promising :)

I’ve sent the link via pm. Good luck 🙂 try not to worry as it can be improved, plus much of the U.K. these days has sound coming from somewhere either next door, roads, planes, trains.

Recently have been in one of the hotels located close to motorway. The window had secondary glazing there and the difference to noise was massive when it was closed

@Beachwaves127 would you mind sending me the link to secondary glazing company please, I’m in london and have a road noise issue.
