Where to live in Harrogate? Help!

We would love to move to Harrogate but finding house prices a bit disheartening. Anyone know Harrogate or the surrounding area who can recommend where to look?

We'd like a 4 bed house with garden and ideally garage, hard top end budget £650,000. Near to good schools (primary and secondary) and walking distance to amenities. I guess the kind of area mn would describe as "naice". I would like those amenities to be central Harrogate but I think for a house of the size we would like we may need to look further out. Would consider living 2 or even 3 miles out of centre if there were things in that locality other than housing estates. E.g. would like pub, cafe, shop, maybe restaurant, park - things to do outside our front door. Don't really want to be in a village. Have looked at starbeck and wasn't keen.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Anecdote is not fact.

@DogLover24 Oh I remember the grotto at Sunwin House!!! I thought I dreampt that as it seemed so magical with the moving sleigh.

Bet the Londoners stole it and used it to build a yoga studio.

650k would get you a 4 bed semi in York with a 20 min walk to the station. They don't come up too often though.

OP originally posted in September, I'd love to know what she decided.

I lived there before moving South, and still visit regularly. Traffic is bad, probably worse than average for the size of the town, but if you expect it and factor it in, then you make the choice to live with that in return for the benefits.

I can never decide if those who want about it, are people who still think national traffic volumes are the same as the 70's or people who have moved from London and expect zero cars!

@HJ40 we decided on harrogate! Thank you all for your comments. We have had an offer on a house accepted so just need to sort out the dates and hopefully be moved in a couple of months. @Fatyorkshirerascal Thank you! Glad to not be confused with the londoners that everyone seems to hate 😉northerners Unite!!!

people Do know that ‘londonders’ probably were not born or from there? They probably are Yorkshire folk (and elsewhere) who moved there in their 20s and are now moving back in their 30s +.

AnnieBlatt · 19/01/2024 20:36

Londonders are just people who moved there temporarily. They are probably Yorkshire folk coming back. You would class me as a Londoner I would imagine. Yet I am from Lincolnshire originally and moved around and made the move up here last year from the south. So not sure what everyone has against people who have lived in London for a while.

cowskeepingmeupatnight · 22/01/2024 09:23

@Whereinharrogate I’m so glad you decided on Harrogate! We moved here last August and haven’t regretted it for a second. Our neighbours have all been lovely by the way - I don’t think some of the small mindedness on display in this thread is representative at all.

People like you are the ones who are destroying the town my family have lived in for generations

Hi @DogLover24 just happened upon this thread and saw your reply so thought I should respond albeit a few weeks late!
I actually moved south to Harrogate - I’m from Newcastle. DH is from Leeds. We both grew up in way less privileged towns, nothing like Harrogate, but have been lucky to do well in life and have well-paying jobs that enabled us to save and eventually move to Harrogate mid life (and to compete with those high house prices pushed up by the lovely Londoners). Does this make a difference? Do you believe in social mobility? Or should we have stayed in the poor towns we grew up in?

I've got a different perspective. Our family moved to Harrogate six years ago, and love it, can't recommend it more highly.

We didn't have family or friends there, but it's worked out well. We live in the Cold Bath Road area. Kids in primary and secondary, two dogs. Yes there is rush hour traffic, but what town doesn't? We walk or bike every where, work from home a bit and commute to London as well so don't use the car much at all Monday-Friday. Harrogate scores high for walkability if you can live close to the town (very much achievable with your budget). Many local independent shops, lots of after-school clubs (sport, drama etc) and the older kids can cycle around to see their mates across town. It's a safe place for teens to push boundaries and practice teen-ing, and Leeds and York on the doorstep when they're old enough. Several top state schools. Local buses and trains are good too.

It's friendly, rich in culture and events - a stream of literary, food, beer festivals, two brilliant theatres, galleries, markets. Beautiful place, very green with gorgeous parks, woods, the Stray. The Turkish Baths. And it's a stone's throw from open countryside - we often spend weekends walking in the river valleys, Dales, Moors or at the coast.

We've found folk here to be very welcoming, didn't struggle to make friends even in middle-age, and the population is becoming more diverse. Growing levels of social activism and engagement esp around climate, refugees, homelessness. Harrogate will likely get a new MP in the next general election. No probs seeing GP. No NHS dentist for adults but that's neither new or unique to this town. Had some minor ops at the hospital and it's been fine.

We've lived in many other places in the UK and to be honest I'm always surprised to hear people complaining about Harrogate as its got to be one of the nicest places to live in the UK. Many people in our country would give their right arms to live here (and would suck up the traffic too as a small price to pay). New blood coming in (yes including Londoners!) brings new energy. Feel free to DM me if any questions and good luck with your search, OP.

What is the weather like in Harrigate. We are thinking of moving that way, currently in Cambridgeshire and the summers are always nice here

LillianGish · 20/11/2024 22:24

I grew up near Harrogate and my memory is that it was always quite a few degrees colder than the surrounding area with a biting wind. I can remember more than one occasion when we would all buy hats on a day out there because it was so cold. I recently took my mum back for visit in the summer along with my family and mum and I were discussing this phenomenon and wondering if it was still true -,sure enough, a couple of days into our stay we both had to go out and buy some extra layers! I can confirm it is as desirable as ever, but warm it is not
