Preloved Conservatory

Would it be unwise to fit a conservatory that’s been in place? Im thinking off buying one off ebay and getting someone to refit in for us, with new seals, etc.

Has anyone done this?

I wouldn’t do this as an owner of a conservatory I can’t see it being resealed well.

poorbuthappy · 25/09/2023 10:34

We bought a second hand conservatory and sold it on when we replaced with our extension. I think if you trust your fitter (DH did it) it can work out very well.

PropertyUndecided · 25/09/2023 14:14

Thanks both. I’m thinking of trying to find someone i trust to fit it for us.

Glad to read you’ve had a good experience @poorbuthappy . My DH is in no way ‘handy’ though and i’d have much better chance of sealing them properly than he would

Any other views ?

I wouldn’t. Disaster waiting to happen.

LuluBlakey1 · 25/09/2023 18:22

Why do you want a conservatory? Cold in Winter, hot in summer, eat heating if they are heated.

PropertyUndecided · 26/09/2023 08:42

can you elaborate? do you mean risks like leakages?

DH wants one. I think we’ll get an extension down the line

I can’t see a problem, as long as it’s taken down carefully, then it should be no different to installing a new one. It will all depend on who’s doing it? Same with anything really.

I'd ask how old the conservatory is. I understand from discussions about replacing our 25 year old conservatory roof that they're a lot more modular nowadays. If you need to fix it or want to replace the roof it's easier and cheaper with a newer conservatory.

I'd be wary of buying a dismantled conservatory that is over 10 years old.

KievLoverTwo · 26/09/2023 10:21

You will probably have to pay for someone to dismantle it too - most people selling them want someone else to take it apart.

Do you then need foundations laid? Idk.

Has your DH actually experienced a conservatory in the height of summer and winter? If you are planning an extension anyway it will be a huge disappointment and waste of money because they are unusable for a large part of the year unless you go fancy with heat reflecting glass, expensive fitted blinds and underfloor heating.

Definitely worth bearing this in mind, thank you.

Gosh that does sound expensive. Lots to think about.

If its a 30year old polycarb roof with old glass panels then yes. If its a modern build with modern UV resistant glass and modern thermal standards its fine, especially if built with half walls with a layer of insulation.
