Installing skylight on pitched extension roof with flat ceiling?

Partner and I are wanting to get a reasonably large sky light installed in our extension which is the kitchen. The extension roof is pitched but there is a flat false ceiling. There is a hatch to see into the ceiling and inside is lots of wooden trusses. Would it be possible to have a skylight installed in this?

Thanks in advance

If the centres of the trusses are 600mm ( spacing) then they make velux to fit those, if the centres are 450-400 mm then no they don’t come that small . It’s not a good idea to cut a truss without lots of work ( structural engineer). It can be done but it’s a lot more work/cost .

Are you planning to expose all the trusses? Or just make a sort of slot? As Diyextension says, it depends on the spacing of the trusses- though they tend to be standard in spacing.
I suppose you might be able to get one custom-made if you could find a good carpenter.

We have a sun tube installed in a similar set up. A 'window' inserted into the pitched roof and a highly mirrored tube brings the light into the room below. It makes an incredible difference.

It's completely possible, just depends how much you want to spend. You could expose the trusses and put in a really large velux or skylight.

Do you need planning permission for this? We're planning on extending and I didn't think about any natural light for the new dressing room so weighing up velux vs sun tube vs obscured window on the side.

@Stephisaur no we didn't need planning permission. I believe they generally don't require it unless installing in a listed building or conservation area - but I am not a planning expert so would check local regulations just to be on the safe side.
