Cabinets like British Standard but cheaper (and not Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch)

We're doing a big home renovation project this year. This will be our 'forever' kitchen, but because we need to do other bits at the same time, our budget isn't huge.

I love the look of British Standard but we got the quote and it was too high for for a fairly basic layout. Secondly, we got a quote from HKoC, which was far cheaper than British Standard (about half!), but they don't deliver to Scotland, where I live.

I've investigated DIY Kitchens and units online, but both have recent reviews having to do with missing pieces, mis-measured cabinetry, and a lack of customer service when problems were identified.

If you like a timber shaker cupboard in the British Standard style, where have you ordered yours in the last few years and would recommend? We definitely want timber (not 100% MDF) so understand we will be spending a premium on that, but don't have 20k to spend on cabinetry alone. Thank you!

I used this company two years ago, made from solid pine wood and painted any colour you like, also bespoke sizes. The drawers didnt have the dove joints if that is important to you. I think the units cost me around 3k. Somebody on here at the time said pine is too soft and it will chip / swell but I have had zero problems with it.

I also had a look at this company but they did work out more expensive.

I’ve had 5 kitchens from DIY kitchens and not had a problem 🤷‍♀️

We had ours from a company called Pineland. They make pine kitchens, painted however you want and will alter their basic units to design you something bespoke. I thought they were really reasonable. We have a big larder unit, a double base unit, a triple base unit, a set of pan drawers and an peninsula unit with oak worktops and it came to about £5000.

Search for a Lochanna supplier near you - they do nice painted shaker kitchens with dovetail drawers.

DeVOL is similar but cheaper, not sure if it will be cheap enough though.

Me too (1 not 5)

There are two diy kitchens, one is part of b and q, not good, the one in Pontefract gets good reviews on here.

We’ve used pineland x 2 - been great and make bespoke to your design

GreenestValley · 20/09/2023 23:43

Devol is not cheaper

We used DIY Kitchens recently and the quality is excellent. We had a couple of bits damaged in transit but everything was replaced quickly and without any issues. All the units arrive pre-built so it was really quick and easy to assemble and fit (which we did ourselves)

I vote for DIY kitchens. I had a couple of issues with the wrong cupboard delivered and a missing piece and they sorted it out straight away. Yes it was annoying at the time but my kitchen is gorgeous and I really appreciated the good service with regards rectifying the mistake.

I have another friend who also has one of their kitchens and is equally delighted with theirs.

I used DIY kitchens, the quality is amazing for the price. I went for the most expensive range (solid wood doors, bespoke paint colour) and I have to say it looks beautiful.

It was a nightmare ordering and I needed lots of exchanges which added enormously to the length of time it took to install.
But I have ADHD and really struggle with organisation, I was having a family crisis at the time, my so-called experienced kitchen fitter was a disaster and I had to hand hold him through the whole thing.

Honestly it was horrific. BUT I got a quality kitchen for the same price as a cheapo one and it was worth it.
My next kitchen will be DIY kitchens, especially now I understand the system.

Thanks everyone!

It sounds like DIY Kitchens suits a lot of people and I am going to look at Olive & Barr and Pineland as well. I don't think we can make an ex-display work because the room is an unusual layout.

I would absolutely love a Devol kitchen but they are definitely not in the cards for us, price wise!
