Where to donate a Parker Knoll Sofa for refurbishment/reupholstering

Have a Parker Knoll sofa in which sunlight from our conservatory has faded and in the centre some disintegration of fabric. It’s a really comfortable sofa that has hardly been used and it would be a shame to just throw away. We have decided against the expense of getting it reupholstered as in view of new grandkids that might wreck it. Any ideas of where to donate it to please. Tried facebook marketplace but no luck so far.

I wouldn’t swap Parker Knoll for Ikea, I would reupholster or just buy a very big throw with ties so it doesn’t slip all the time.

If the fabric has disintegrated (ie there's a hole in it) might that void the fire safety rating, as the filling could be more easily exposed to flame? I might be wrong though.

If you just want rid of it rather than selling, Freecycle or equivalent on Facebook, or try asking local upholsterers if they'd like it for free. Sound like it needs recovering rather than reupholstering.

It’s just a small area that the fabric is disintegrating but that is not through wear and tear but the sunlight. We have hardly ever used the sofa as the conservatory was always just a dumping ground and either too hot or cold which is why we are demolishing it with a new extension. Haven’t thought about the fire safety certification now being invalid. I live not too far from High Wycombe the home of furniture!!

If you’re anywhere near WGC then there is this charity:

https://www.recoverteam.co.uk/about-us/

Otherwise, I’ve had a set of removable covers made by Plumbs for an expensive faded sofa that were good quality, although I’m sure a local company could do as good a job for less money.

May I ask roughly how much roughly the Plump covers were please? Hope that is not too cheeky.

Thanks for the link. Not too far from WGC. Just thinking that it propably won’t fit in our car though to transport it there.

eBay is free to list. You’ll only pay a percentage of what you sell it for.

@LindaDawn

The Plumbs covers were about £500 at the time, which would have been about 12 to 15 years ago. Think I managed to get an offer on them, it was sturdy fabric and they were well made. They came out and measured up and when the covers were ready they came out and fitted them.

They also lasted really well - we gave the sofa away a couple of years ago and the charity uplifters shredded them by sliding the sofa down the road on its back because it was heavy and they didn’t realise it had casters (they had been told!).

I’m quite close to High Wycombe. Lots of smaller firms do this work. I’ve used one in Great Missenden. They collect and deliver it back.

dontcallmelen · 18/09/2023 12:33

Most upholstery shops will collect & return for you, I would definitely look into getting it re-upholstered they are beautiful sofas & be very hard to replicate the quality of Ercol without paying an absolute fortune.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2023 15:36

@dontcallmelen Its not Ercol. It’s Parker Knoll.

FiloPasty · 18/09/2023 15:40

If you look at local upholsterers mine advertises sofas on her Instagram and people snap them up

Oops mixed my makers up, I’m currently lusting after a Ercol chair😊

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2023 15:58

@dontcallmelen I like Ercol. Quite a few pieces in my house.

TizerorFizz · 18/09/2023 15:59

Even DDs has just bought nesting pebble tables! In the blonde finish.

dontcallmelen · 18/09/2023 16:01

I’m very envious Tizer such beautifully crafted furniture, I did have a Ercol sideboard which my dd commandeered for her new house, I occasionally give it a stroke when I’m over at her house.

Thanks. I didn’t realise free to list.I suppose you can’t give away on eBay then as they won’t get any fees.
