White paint for north facing bedroom

iwantabreakfastpantry · 17/09/2023 10:41

Would like to inject some light into a north facing bedroom without it feeling cold. It gets some light from the east in the morning but on a sunny day, whilst other rooms are bright, this one looks quite dark.
Any recommendations for a white that would work well?
TIA

Cream rather than white mightn't be so stark?

We’ve Slaked Lime by Little Greene in our north facing room and really like it, possibly worth a try.

A pale yellow, verging towards the red spectrum rather than the blue would be much warmer than white. Apricot ( doesn’t have to be deep) would be even better. Something like the old ‘ hint ‘ colours but two shades darker.

I have had several north facing rooms with small, windows, and what really lights them is a coloured ceiling, either pale yellow or apricot. We painted one in a pale apricot , and we used to think we had left the light on by mistake.

I have a North facing room that only gets a little sun at sunrise. I have used Rock Salt by Dulux, it’s got a warmth to it.

Dulux light and space in jasmine or coastal glow would be worth a sample pot, I used it in an attic and it did seem to be extra light giving.

My go-to for north facing rooms is Dulux Sundrenched Saffron 5.

It really lights and warms the room. A previous poster mentioned a paint that makes them think they left the lights on - yep, this one does that too. It's like magic.

It's not a white though. It's what I would call a really good warm neutral.

If you want an off-white/cream colour, then I like Dulux Rose White (which despite its name is cream, not pink). But I would say Sundrenched Saffron 5 would be better.

There is also a Sundrenched Saffron 6 which may be lighter than the 5, but I haven't tried it.

Cream or pale yellow will look warmer than white.

I personally love pale yellows in north facing rooms as they feel so warm. I'd definitely go more of a cream colour than white. We made the mistake of painting one room mostly off white and it's so clinical and cold.

My DD chose Little Green Slaked Lime for her north facing bedroom. She loves it but I find it cold looking.

Designers guild Chalk no. 4 works well for us in a North facing bedroom. Looks neutral and contemporary rather than creamy, not too cold or dull.

LaundryWoes · 17/09/2023 16:27

I have dulux jasmine white in my north facing bedroom, it’s warmer than brilliant white without being magnolia.

We also have one of the dulux light and space paints in another north facing room, and it really does bounce the light around, even on a dull day.

Thanks so much everyone!
Sorry, I wasn’t clear when I said white - what I meant was that I don’t want embrace the darkness with dark rich colours. So, I am very happy with the off white/cream suggestions

Crown antique cream. Whatever you choose get testers!

The bedroom in our last house was north facing and we used dulux Timeless, it’s a warm off white and worked nicely in the room.

We have a North facing bathroom with a tiny window - we had it a pale yellow for years which brightened it, but it's now pale orange which makes it bright and warm feeling.

My N/W facing study is in F&B peignoir and feels really light - my desk and a large bookcase are both really dark and it still feels really like a light room. I've also put a large mirror on one wall - it takes up almost the whole wall, got it specially made, and it's positioned so I'm not constantly looking at myself when I'm in there - and that brings a lot of light in too. Peignoir is pinkish in northern light though, something to bear in mind.

DDs is northfacing. She has a warm white which is perfect. Valspar White Hot.

Iwishmynamewassheilah · 18/09/2023 08:08

Shaded white by F&B. It has a hint of grey/green. FB advice was to work with the north light and don’t try to warm it up. It works well but it’s a large study room not a lounge.

We have white walls in our north facing room , never thought of the room as being cold. Our accessories (blind, lampshade, throw, rug) are all mustard which brightens the room.
