Puddles on New Tarmac Driveway

Hi, I'd be grateful for some advice before I go back to the contractor. We had our driveway re-tarred this week, it was finished yesterday then unfortunately it rained most of the night.

Woke up to this puddle at the side of the house, it is still there 24hrs later. I'm guessing it shouldn't be there at all......looks like a slight dip in the drive at the side of the house.

I'm not sure what they can do to fix it. It's in a part of the driveway that doesn't get any sun. There are a few much smaller patches of water but it's just sitting on top of the tarmac rather than in a puddle ("bird bath") like this? Of course I am catastrophising (sadly what I tend to do) and worry that in any flash flood/heavy rain this could be a whole lot worse!!!

Thanks
TOOIK

If you add to it with a watering can, does it then run off down the drive?
You need to tell them pronto. They may be able to put the roller on the drive again to raise this bit up.

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow re: adding water and will message him. If it had evaporated today i'd be less concerned but it doesn't look to have gone down in size at all. They have done a great job so this is a bit of an annoyance. The driveway does slope downwards but not at the side...

Your drive has no drainage fall. If it doesn’t run off. The puddle looks like a depression. Where did you expect rainfall to go?

Theonlyoneiknow · 16/09/2023 23:56

To be honest, I just thought it would roll off/down! This part at the side isn't on a slope like the front of the house is. I'm not sure what they will do to fix it. It seems as though there is a depression where the puddle is as there is only that one - rather than lots of them? Can they fix that easily?! Aside from not being great for the tarmac what are the other risks? Trying not to get in a flap!

Hi OP. Did you solve this? Thanks.

Theonlyoneiknow · 21/05/2024 19:36

Hi, yes they came back and put a french drain in across where the big puddle sits. Our driveway is on a slope towards the front of the house but they had made it too flat at the side of the house where those puddles were!

Ok thank you for replying! We have loads of puddles on our block driveway and I'm wondering what to do.

Is the block paving old and is there concrete between the blocks or sand? We have pooling on ours and it’s due to the sandy base layer basically getting silted up over time so it doesn’t drain as well. We are having it taken up and relaid ( mainly because of a tree root though).

if your block paving is concrete bonded that isn’t relevant though.

We are new to the house but I think it would have been laid in 2008 when the house was built. I think it's sand - there are lots of weeds coming through. We can't afford to relay the whole driveway unfortunately.
