Anyone seen these type of gas wall mounted heaters?

Asking for a friend who has found a rental house. It says gas heating, but instead of proper radiators it has these on the wall.
The EPC is a 'D'. It's a fairly new house (10 years)

She's a bit worried it'll cost her a fortune to heat?

Anyone seen these type of gas wall mounted heaters?

I've never seen these before. Does she know if they're connected to the gas mains or if they've been converted?

  • Installation options - Available for natural gas (optional LPG conversion kit is available)

If it's been converted to LPG, the chances are, it's bottled gas. The price of those fluctuate violently, and, last winter, friends of mine had real trouble tracking a delivery down. Iirc correctly they told me the price rose by a third.

The only energy markets that are regulated for the consumer are electricity and mains gas; anything outside of that is completely out of the renter's hands.

For example, I'm on electricity and oil (kerosene).

When I moved into a rental in July 2021, a litre of oil was 45p. In March 2022 because of Russia, it was £1.30p a litre.

This week, it's 73p a litre plus VAT.

There's no government body saying 'there there, nobody can afford that, we're going to force you to have an upper price limit.'

Here's an example of reasons why my oil has fluctuated recently:

(I am part of a local oil club to buy in for the village, so they explain)

Oli prices continue to rise reaching new highs for the year! Brent crude over $90 today as news Sudia Arabia announces it would extend its 1 million bpd cut in product.

Oil Reaches New 2023 High! Brent crude over $88 today as news of a massive draw in US oil inventories for a second week in a row and which are now at there lowest level since last December.

Brent crude continues its upward path passing $85 a barrel today as Russia announces an additional production cut of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) on top of the current 500,000 bpd cut.

If it's on mains, it'll probably be fine. If it's bottled gas, your friend should be aware that what she pays for each bottle will be both completely out of her control and not regulated by anyone at all.

I had an old one in a house a few houses ago, but never used it, so am no help at all, but I can't believe they still make and install them.

Thanks, this is so helpful!
Looking at it on rightmove, there is a gas boiler in the kitchen, so I think it is most likely on mains.

Don’t assume. That could be just for hot water.

Your friend needs to ask.

C4tastrophe · 09/09/2023 19:22

It’s a standard gas heater mounted on an external wall. If the house is 10 years old it will be pretty well insulated.
Personally I would not discount the house just because of this. It’s more hassle as it’s independently controlled, on the other hand, you can whack it on as and when without trying to heat the whole house.

Windmill34 · 09/09/2023 19:46

I used to have these years ago as I couldn’t afford central heating .
I found them fine
you just turn it on like you would a gas cooker, the flame Ignites that’s it !
only thing is you can’t time them to come on like central heating radiators as there nothing to do with the boiler.
she will have separate boiler for hot water

StamppotAndGravy · 09/09/2023 20:11

My parents still have one left over from the 60s as an emergency backup in case the normal boiler breaks down. It was lethal, got really hot and you could start the gas without lighting it.
