Barrow in Furness move

We're thinking of moving to Barrow in Furness as it seems very cheap. Our budget is 200k, our DC have left home now. We live in Kent currently and are wondering if Barrow in Furness is a nice town to live in? It seems to have a bad reputation. Is it cheap for a reason? Thanks

You need to think of the future. Where are your DC located and how often do they intend visiting? What happens if you need support when you are older?

My mum and stepfather moved to west Cumbria about 20 years ago. It’s lovely and the housing is cheap but there is virtually no public transport outside the towns. No local shops and they had to access some specialist healthcare in Newcastle. Even the ‘local’ hospitals in Whitehaven and Carlisle are a long trek by public transport.

My step father is dead now but developed dementia and getting any care at all was a nightmare.

My mum can still drive but what if you no longer drive?

Another issue is the lack of plumbers, tradespeople etc especially for smaller jobs. Not sure if that’s a west Cumbria specific problem or applies to the south as well.

Not the best area but there’s been massive regeneration in that area loads of the old boarding houses part demolished that make then into 4 bed HA homes
parking very difficult and chances are your neighbouring houses will be split into 3 flats or houses of multiple occupation

I wouldn't choose to live in that Morecambe street plus the heating and maintenance costs! On street parking, lots of neighbouring flats. It's colder and wetter and the sea breeze in the winter 🥶

There are nicer parts of Morecambe that are still very affordable.

Barrow has huge issues with deprivation and is very isolated. The town centre is a ghost town and it just seems to have a sense of hopelessness. Declining population rate is one of, if not the highest in the Uk. I would not want to live there. So many nice places in Cumbria, Barrow isn't one of them..

I’m from Barrow, moved out after graduating from uni. Most people who live in barrow never leave!

my parents still live there. Yes there is a huge decline in the town centre, but there are some lovely places to live like Hawcoat, Roose, Holbeck.

Lancaster is only an hour on the train if you want to visit a city.

The Lake District is on your doorstep and Kendal and Ulverston are ok for shopping.

What still remains in Barrow is community and I absolutely love that.

My son is looking at completing a degree apprenticeship and I’m encouraging him to look at BAE in barrow. He can earn a good salary whilst learning and will be able to get on the property ladder.

Don’t dismiss it!
