Temporary road closure appeal

Not sure where to put his…but…

We have received a letter from a local sporting club advising they have applied for a road closure for the road our house is on for a day later this year.

some very nice words about not wanting to inconvenience etc etc. Except, we are very rural, and closing the road is effectively tying us to our homes that day as it’s one road that goes past our home. There are no alternative entrances and exits on the route and there’s nowhere for us to walk to. There was no consultation, no offer of contact for the day for emergencies or similar.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to appeal a council decision to close a road. I’m confident other suitable roads are available, without residential property on them. Our council website is being useless on this, just tells me how to apply.

OP I think you're being a little unreasonable if they've given you plenty of notice and time to plan

Either WFH or make sure you're up and out early

But, if it's really unavoidable. Councils have to make sure there are access for emergency service vehicles etc and the teams closing the road should be able to provide access for you or road boards etc.

Ultimately if it's just for cycling, find out the times etc and then just move the bloody signs.

If they have carriers etc which aren't moveable by hand, speak to the council / TM company in regards to why you need access and I'm sure there will assist.

Need a pint of milk? Unreasonable.
Require access because you care for someone who may require emergency assistance? Completely reasonable

A load of roads near here are going to be closed soon for an Ironman event. (Doesn't affect us, BTW - this isn't a personal peeve). I think it is totally unreasonable that thousands of people are inconvenienced, without compensation, just so that a private company can make pots of money "The IRONMAN Group is owned by Advance, a private, family-owned business."
The same applies to many of these other races - private companies putting local people out for their own gain.
I have no objection to events laid on nationally, or races as part of local fetes etc.

At the very least these companies should contribute a sum to the local council tax proportional to the number of households they inconvenience.

Emergency access is provided for- if it isn't in the plans, then check with the council, it's their job to see it is.
