Bombproof kitchen

We need a new kitchen and it needs to last. My DH has very destructive habits - with the best will in the world he is short-sighted, clumsy and just destroys things - so rather than being constantly irritated by damage I want it to be solid as. I'm definitely thinking stainless steel worktops and stainless steel sink and very tough lino floor. Has anyone got any other tips? Handles last no time usually and I need some really foolproof splash backs, not tiling.

I think getting a new husband might be cheaper?

I jest. I live with a butter-fingered giant too, you have my sympathies.

Bumping your entertaining thread.

DrySherry · 07/09/2023 14:12

Don't let him into your new kitchen would be my thinking. It's less work and stress doing that side of things yourself if your unlucky enough to have a six fingered bridge troll that's anything like mine.

Oh god, please no.

I wouldn't suffer my OH on anyone!

He loves cooking too. Can't get him out of there 😫Our place is modern, so I'm seriously wondering if I could adapt an ex-industrial kitchen.

Look for a supplier of stainless steel commercial kitchens, the kind they put in schools or restaurants.

There might be 2nd hand ones around as sadly, so many restaurants are closing. Then you need a specialist fitter.

For flooring again look at commercial/industrial suppliers. Hotel Quality are other words to use when searching.

CornedBeef451 · 07/09/2023 14:32

That could work quite well. You can buy free standing metal units too so you could switch out anything he manages to break.

I'm the heavy handed one in my house, we have to have soft close hinges to save the drawers. Although DH avoids this by rarely closing a cupboard door!

SleepingisanArt · 07/09/2023 14:32

You need a commercial kitchen. The whole thing will be stainless steel (even the splashbacks). It can be dented and scratched but they tend not to have door handles and other bits to fall off! You can buy modular pieces or get a quote from a commercial kitchen company.

ScribblingPixie · 07/09/2023 14:36

Oh this is great advice, thank you, I think this is the way to go. I don't mind things getting a bit dented (which they will) if I can make it part of the look.

Another approach, look at the Used Kitchen Co or ebay etc for secondhand kitchens. If it’s already a little used - and you paid much less as a result - then any damage he does might be a bit less upsetting ?

Teddleshon · 07/09/2023 14:56

Can’t recommend stainless steel surfaces and splash backs enough. I am married to Mr Bean and even he hasn’t been able to damage or mark them.

ScribblingPixie · 07/09/2023 14:58

I don't know, @minipie, I'd be all thrilled with my bargain then walk in and find cumin stains all over white cupboard doors, wooden surfaces soaked in hot water and kickboards kicked off and trampled on, and it'd just be grrrrrr.

Stainless steel does dent, and shows all the marks! But will still be functional.

pickledandpuzzled · 07/09/2023 16:59

Oh great idea!

Mine thought crockery breakage was just totally routine, and nothing to mention or worry about. No concept of being careful with special items at all.

In fact, no real concept of special!

I was very laid back at first, then realised it was ridiculous the amount of stuff he broke.
