We want to move and DH keeps banging on about Newcastle.

So:

Nice areas, ok areas, dodgy areas, schools (anything 'hippy' muchly appreciated ).

Anything else you think of.

TIA.

Newcastle is a great place. The most desirable area is Jesmond, but prices there have rocketed over the last few years. There was a recent thread on Newcastle which
I've linked to here:

Good luck - I hope you find somewhere you both like.

Patsy

Sorry, meant o say, feel free to pick my brains if there's anything that's not covered by that thread.

Can you let us know your budget? That would help so we don't recommend where you can't afford!

TheodoresMummy · 03/03/2008 15:08

Thank you PatsyCline.

Will read and post more if I need to.

Budget wise, not sure. Depends on whether we rent or are able to buy (MIL) might invest.

Well that thread has given me lots to think about !!

Are there any areas with good transport to the city that are a bit quieter, semi-rural even ?

A big garden would be a must for us.

The cycle paths in Monkseaton (if I remember rightly ?) sound fabulous. Anywhere around there semi-rural ? Houses/cottages down lanes kind of thing ?

Also. . . are there any schools which are very relaxed/'alternative' anywhere in the Newcastle area ?

Ponteland is semi-rural I would say and very nice. Some of the villages and small towns to the west of Newcastle are lovely (with excellent state schools). There are trains into the centre of town from Corbridge and Hexham, for instance, and driving into Newcastle takes very little time as the roads are very good (same can't be said if you go north or south of Newcastle).

I can't think of any alternative schools in Newcastle I am afraid. There are some hippy enclaves in parts fo rural Northumberland such as Alston and Hexham/Corbridge has plenty of people who embrace alternative lifestyles (there's even a Buddhist monastry locally so you often see monks doing their shopping, but I digress...)
