Product to stain pine softwood to medium oak colour

As the title. I’ve tried ronseal satin oak on an off-cut and it turned it yellow. I can’t find any tester pots of wood stain, so this could be an expensive test as 500ml tins are ~£30. Any ideas?

Have a look at Protek they sell testers online and have a variety of stain options

Do you ant a stain alone, or one with a wax/varnish component?

I was going to wax it after staining.

I’ve used Colron beeswax to stain birch ply to an oak colour.

I've used synthetic 'wax' called 'wax finish varnish' from polyvine. You can get it in colours as well as clear. It's hardwearing but not as nice as real waxes- I use it in the studio for my desk. They do have a sort of medium oak which works fine on pine.
My go-to for real wax in living areas is Briwax. They do do some coloured versions too, I'm using that on IKEA Ivar shelving, which is pine. It looks good to me. The colour I am using is 'Jacobean' -darkish, which is what I wanted, you'd need to check their chart for a mid-oak. You could put a clear briwax on top if it got dark enough after one coat. https://www.rustins.ltd/briwax/our-products/waxes/briwax-original

Briwax Original | Rustins

Briwax Original is formulated with fast drying, stronger solvents which speed up drying and also increase the cleaning ability of the wax slightly....

(always test a stain or colourd varnish/wax on a bit of scrap wood before use to check colour and texture- preferably the same wood you will be staining)

Brilliant! Thank you. That’s this weekends diy sorted.

Personally I really like hard wax oils, like these. You can get them tinted in a whole range of colours, they're really easy to brush on, and so far proving very hard wearing - floorboards still looks as good as they did when I applied it eight years ago.
