Llandudno

We're planning to move next year, once our youngest leaves home, and want to live in either North Wales or NW England.

We want to be close, preferably walking distance, from the coast and also have a decent town centre and rail links to bigger towns and cities. Llandudno seems to have these so is currently top of the list.

We've visited many times so know the seafront, main shopping street and Great Orme.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone that has lived in Llandudno. What are the pros and cons and which areas would you recommend/avoid?

Worth a bump to see if there are any Llandudno experts here tonight Smile

Have you thought about Bangor?

Summerisover5 · 04/09/2023 21:27

I've lived in North Wales my entire life and wouldn't choose Llandudno, sorry. I spent most of my childhood in Llandudno as my grandparents lived there, and granted it is a lovely place, but only to visit. The parking is horrendous unless you have a driveway, gets extremely busy during the holidays, as well as Conwy. The seagulls are a pain in the arse too. The train links aren't the best either as you normally have to change over in Llandudno Junction and it can take up to 20-25 minutes just to get out of town when it's busy. I live in Deganwy which is nice and generally pretty quiet. I would choose Deganwy, Penrhyn Bay, Rhos on sea (which gets very busy during the holidays but not as bad as Llandudno). All very close to the A55 too. Colwyn Heights is also very nice but not exactly close to the beach. Llanfairfechan (my home town, or village shall I say) is lovely.

sakura06 · 04/09/2023 21:28

Llandudno can be very windy! It's one of my favourite places to visit though. Perhaps not the best rail links compared to Colwyn Bay as you have to change in Junction most of the time. Lots of great shops!

Summerisover5 · 04/09/2023 21:31

@sakura06 I second that! My friend lives on the orme and it's bloody scary when it's windy up there.

YungDumbThrills · 04/09/2023 21:33

I'm in Abergele, and agree with previous poster against Llandudno area. It's so busy in the summer months, and definitely isn't easy to access the a55/train links through those months (trains tend to only have 2 carriages and get rammed). Have you looked at Llanddulas/Abergele or even Prestatyn?

userxx · 04/09/2023 21:35

The seagulls are enough to make that never an option. Violent bastards.

BevoMoka · 04/09/2023 21:47

Great responses, thank you. I'll look at the other places mentioned.
The seagulls, tourists and wind wouldn't put me off but the small, packed, infrequent trains may be a problem. I'll take a look at the train timetable.

Have a look at Prestatyn, nice little high street, with individual shops plus got a shopping parade too. Beach and some lovely walks, offas dyke starts there, trains not to bad, easy access to a55. Also house price not to bad either

Spottywombat · 06/09/2023 13:33

Yep, agree Llandudno is very windy.

I'd also agree with the other posters here about congestion and travel times. Some of the trains go staright to Llandudno but the mainline service is not what it was when it was Virgin.

I'd also consider the medical situation as it's very ropey for provision along the coast now. Glan Clywd is in special measures and I wouldn't want to be admitted there just now.

MrsCarson · 06/09/2023 14:02

I was in Llandudno this morning. Traffic is a nightmare.
There are quite a few dodgy estates/streets in Llandudno that look nice from the outside. So be a bit careful.
Look at Llanrhos just on the outskirts is nice. Penrhyn Bay is lovely, just on the other side of the little Orme, Rhos on sea is nice, but rammed with people in summer and weekends, Deganwy is mostly good as are parts of Llandudno Junction where it meets Deganwy. Let us all know your price range we'll critique the areas we know.

Carpediem15 · 06/09/2023 14:22

No way would I consider Bangor, the High Street is almost closed down and shops are moving out of town, becoming a ghost town.
I live in North Wales and would love to move to N West England - Liverpool, Southport kind of area.

FishPie2 · 06/09/2023 14:58

I have lived in Llandudno, by choice, for a few years and it is a great place to live. The rail link is fine when going to Liverpool, Chester, Manchester Airport etc. and the bus service is pretty good.
Lots of us have our own drive and don't use town car parks, there is a great buzz around town even when there are loads of tourists here and the shopping is good. Walking distance to M & S, Asda, Aldi, Primark and a host of other shops, flat promenade or a nice walk around the Great Orme or down to the end of the pier.
Seagulls are a pain in the arse whichever seaside town you chose to live in.
Then we are surrounded by great scenery, not too far to Conwy, Betws y Coed, Snowdonia et al.
We came for the week-end and stayed for years.

Very good point to think about the medical situation. I'll look into that more.

Edited

Price will be up to £400,000. At least 3 bedrooms and ideally off street parking.

You should be fine and have a fair bit of choice.

I'd look at Rhos-on-Sea.

Basically the closer you get to Deganwy and Conwy, prices are strong and the closer to Rhyl, the more care you need to take with area.

BevoMoka · 09/09/2023 00:20

Thank you for the links MrsCarson Smile

It's a really nice place so long as you don't mind goats climbing your shrubbery 😆🤔

FishPie2 · 09/09/2023 06:50

They ate £400 worth of my friends new plants but never mind they are good for tourism. 🐐🐐🐐

😂Sorry but that is quite funny. They have become more noticeable since Covid. I quite like seeing them, but I worry when they are in the middle of the roundabouts eating and traffic is heavy.

KirstenBlest · 09/09/2023 16:18

Not lived there but been there countless times and as far as I know it's fine.
Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea are not bad and neither is Abergele. I think I'd avoid Rhyl but Prestatyn is OK. The west side of Wirral is good but I don't know about rail links.

We've thought about West Kirby on the Wirral but there seems to be more going on in Llandudno.
