Moving to Manchester area

I'm looking to relocate from London back to my home region very soon, but can't decide where to base myself! Budget is up to around £950pcm and eventually £210k to buy.

It's just me, so a small place is fine (although really need outside space) and hopefully a dog who likes lots of long runs in green spaces.

Ideally around 30 mins drive from family in Bolton, and within reasonable reach of Manchester train stations back to London. Love the countryside but think I need somewhere a bit livelier than some of the small villages, so that excludes nice places like Egerton, Edgworth etc (out of my budget anyway).

I've tried online apps showing areas which match the driving time criterion but am left feeling rather overwhelmed with choice!

Considering Ramsbottom (though no train link), Moseley, Delph...anyone any thoughts on these or similar? TIA!

Rawtenstall and Ramsbottom would be perfect aside from the train but you can always get the tram into Manchester from bury, prestwich (Heaton park) ?

£210 would probably just about get you a 2 bed terrace in Prestwich or Whitefield. Both are very green, but still feel like Manchester proper, and within very easy reach of Bolton - 20mins in the car off peak. Prestwich in particular has proper green spaces (Heaton park, Prestwich Clough) of the scale where you can get lost and feel like you've left the city.

Agree that Rawtenstall and Ramsbottom are great options unless you need to commute into Manchester daily. But if you can WFH a little then Ramsbottom in particular is great. Probably around half an hour into Manchester off peak by car, or bus to Bury and then a 30 min tram. But a daily rush hour commute along the m66 would be soul destroying.

Have you considered the Chorley area? Great train service into Manchester and lovely small towns and villages around. Lots of great green space for fresh air and walks too. Adlington ticks all the boxes.

There are nice areas of mossley but if you was considering these have you thought about motorway links, you'd have to venture through Ashton to get on the motorway, it's not that far from the motorway however it might add abit of time on your journey to Bolton, I guess it depends on top mossley or bottom, I'd suggest top mossley if you was considering mossley. Have you tried Littleborough near Rochdale? It's on the Pennine boarder and the train to Manchester is about 20 mins.

Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall are great (am biased). People are lovely, countryside is amazing. Manchester is easy to get to. We moved here from Yorkshire, never regretted it.

Thank you for all the suggestions, that's tonight's areas for research sorted! I think Prestwich might be slightly out of my budget, nice as it would be to be somewhere that close to the city, which is a shame as Clifton Park looks awesome. I'm looking at properties with decent sized rear gardens too which means I have to look further out unfortunately.

You're on the doorstep of Heaton Park here.

Don't rule Prestwich out completely, prices seem to be levelling out at the moment.

How about Macclesfield? Lovely town and lovely countryside close by, train route into Manchester centre.

helplesshopeless · 04/09/2023 21:19

Hmm second thoughts Macclesfield might be a bit too expensive if you're after a decent back garden
