I found what looks like some really nice flats in Catford near the railway station (rightmove) adenmore road, anybody know anything about them?

They might be nice flats, but I wouldn't go near Catford with a 50 ft barge pole.

I avoid it at all costs. A few months ago we were on the way back from a show and had to pass through there. We were asked three times within the space of literally five minutes for money and then followed.

I live in Catford and absolutely love it!

LaurieFairyCake · 02/09/2023 21:59

There's loads of great things about Catford !

I go over there all the time to the fancy cinema and plenty of good places to eat

LaurieFairyCake · 02/09/2023 22:02

And there's a very cute one bed house for sale for £25k more than that flat on Silvermere road Smile

There's loads of activities on in Catford if you have young children.
Also, I find it's a really nice of mix of people, ages and ethnicities. My area at least feels safe, friendly, but not snobby or posh. I think people here are a lot more down to earth than Brockley, Dulwich and Blackheath. The housing estates around here make me feel like I'm in the 1950s. Children playing out, ice cream vans, dog walkers chatting..

Waterlink Way is absolutely beautiful. It's so well-kept but feels natural, and is really pleasant to cycle along, and well lit, unlike Hilly Fields.
The centre really isn't that bad. Lots of high streets in SE London are just phone shops and laundrettes. We have a Superdrug, plenty of greengrocers, a market, charity shops..
Also, Catford Mews is a real hive of activity now. They have workshops for children and put on Baby+ film viewings so you can watch films with babies or people with sensory needs. The cafe there is also getting really trendy.
There's a lovely baby pool on Bromley Road.
Rhyme Time at Sydenham Library and sometimes outdoor theatre productions in Literary Square outside rhe library, done to a very, very high standard and very cheap tickets.

I don't live in Catford but we're not far away. Those flats were built on the site of the old Catford Greyhound Stadium. They're still fairly new. They are pretty close to Ladywell Fields, which is a terrific park. There was a lot of work done a few years back to improve it, very successfully. Ladywell Arena is good for athletics training if that's important to you. There's a parkrun in Mountsfield Park and another in Hilly Fields, both a short walk away. Lewisham Hospital is nearby. Fairly big teaching hospital with an A&E department. Transport from Catford is pretty good, I think. Two railway stations, lots of buses, not far from Lewisham which has the DLR as well as a lot more mainline rail connections. Lewisham shopping centre and market are not bad at all for food shopping and basics. Bromley is not far for a better range of non-food shops.

Thanks everybody for advice recommendations etc .... My son is the one actually looking but has "employed" his dear old mum (aka me) possibly because I have a secret addiction to rightmove....aka he sets me off to search areas with parameters of what he wants in a flat aka 2 decent bedrooms near transport and maximum of £350K

Catford is really nice for the most part.

MarshyMcMarshFace · 02/09/2023 23:41

I had a friend who lived in the Ravensbourne Park Gardens area, it was lovely and really handy for the station.

MarshyMcMarshFace · 02/09/2023 23:42

Another friend had kids at Kilmorie primary, lovely community.

Alwaystired2023 · 02/09/2023 23:55

Catford is like most of south east London to be fair, not the nicest but not the worst... the traffic however is horrendous

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/09/2023 06:58

Yes, you've got the South Circular running through the centre of Catford, but once you're away from that and other main roads there are lots of green spaces and street trees.

EggbertHeartsTina · 03/09/2023 10:59

I work in Catford; I love its character but crossing the South Circular is a nightmare. However it is due to be rerouted through Laurence House (Lewisham Council HQ) in order to make it more pedestrian-friendly. TFL consultation ended earlier this year. https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/catford-town-centre?tool=newsfeed##_

Carford is fine. As people have said the gyratory is a bit horrid but there are plenty of quiet roads and parks.

It is classic ordinary SE London, some of the main high street can be a bit dowdy in places and the old shopping centre and area around it can attract some "characters" who are a bit annoying but mostly harmless.

There are some good newish pubs - the Catford Constitutional Club, Ninth Life. There is also a cinema and arty space in the sbopping centre.

As people have said the Waterlink way is lovely for a walk. You are also near Forest Hill, Brockley, Sydenham, Lewisham etc..

It is well connected for public transport with good train services in to central London and a lot of buses. It is also not too far from Lewisham for the DLR.

Totally agree with all the above. Great place for families and young professionals, loads going on (Mountsfield Park seems to be quite a hotspot for community events) and great transport links. Sure, it's a bit rough around the edges but I appreciate the fact it's more down to earth and diverse than some of the neighbouring suburbs. Even Hither Green and Lee have become a bit snobby in recent years. A lot of money has come into certain SE London suburbs in recent years and a lot of the newcomers aren't that friendly, whereas I find the less glamorous parts of SE London like Catford and Grove Park to be more easy-going (source: me, a local mum who frequents many playgrounds and toddler groups in the area!) It's horses for courses really, not every is going to love it but I personally would move to Catford in a heartbeat.

Stumbled across this, totally agree! Ignore the snobby comments, so many areas within London have their nicer and less nice bits. Catford is a big place so naturally some parts will be nicer than others. It's a great place to live, so many community events, things for young families, parks and beautiful Victorian & Edwardian housing stock. The Corbett Estate and the Culverley Green are beautiful!
