How would you remodel this kitchen layout?

So I want to remodel our kitchen as the layout is currently really annoying and not at all a good use of space. For context, it's a 1930s house with the kitchen and dining room knocked through to one room. Wall A is patio doors on the left, back door on the right.

The entryway into the room is currently just a doorway. The door however could move to wall D which was the original entryway to the dining room (currently blocked up and used as a coat cupboard so would need another alternative to that space.

I think i've come up with a good design, but for those that like a bit of layout fun, I'm interested to see if there are any other ideas! We would also be happy to do a bit of structural work to either change the position of the doors to the garden, or to remove the fireplace.

How would you design a kitchen diner in this room?

I haven’t got pen/paper to hand but I’d be inclined to make it on l-shaped kitchen area (along wall E and F).

Keep existing entrance to room.
Put the taller units - fridge/oven/larder - along wall E.
Remove fireplace and have hob and sink along there.
island unit with nothing on it (personal preference of mine, I like them kept clear). You have space for one 1.8-2m wide (we have one that size and it’s perfect - they don’t have to be huge).

Then I would replace the back door and window and put in matching patio doors and have the table on the right hand side.

You could replace all the doors and have one big opening but depends on structural/budget/preference. It’ll be interesting to see what you came up with.

I love a good kitchen project, thanks so much!

Thanks - there are similarities with my design! Where would you put washing machine/tumble dryer?

Ahh, I didn’t consider those. Maybe stacked on top of each other along wall E so they’re tucked out of sight - you have more than enough depth there and could make a cupboard so they’re covered (if it bothers you). But depends on whether you need a vent for the tumble dryer?

or along wall F - either stacked again but in a cupboard at the end (near wall A) or alongside each other.

You may then not have room for a hob and sink along wall F so one of them could go into the island.

Basicaly, I would keep all kitchen/appliances to the left and (uncluttered) dining space to the right.

is that helpful?!’

my personal top tip: have as many 3-drawer pan drawers as you can fit! We have lots of them and they’re brilliant, so much easier than cupboards. (Kirsty Allsop agrees on this.)

I would probably do something like this. Utility cupboard would be floor to ceiling doors and house washer/dryer/cleaning stuff/coats/shoe overflow etc. Move your boiler and water cylinder in there if appropriate.

I think the space would feel cramped with an island and dining table.

Changing the entrance door to a pocket door would free up some space coming into the room.

@MyAnacondaMight - you've basically come up with exactly the same design as me! Essentially I came to the conclusion we can't fit an island.

The reason I was asking for opinions as when I was trying to build the design in diy kitchens I'm struggling to get enough pan drawer/storage space in the kitchen side (we have a dog so I've tried to fit in a built in dog bed to one of the tall cupboards)

This is a 3d drawing I did on floor planner to show the layout. I wondered if there was anything I'm missing? We could potentially do a small box extension on the LH side (say 2m wide) to maybe extend the run of the kitchen?

That looks lovely, nothing like mine! The tall cupboards look good.

It looks as if you’re keeping the chimney breast? - that’ll limit your options. Whereabouts is the sink - wall E?

3isthemagicnumberrr · 02/09/2023 15:09

The 3d image is lovely.

We have a 1930s semi and the same space. Originally the kitchen was on the smaller side so we flipped it around. Units exactly as @MyAnacondaMight ’s drawing, and an island the opposite way to the table on her plan, housing sink, dishwasher, washing machine. We raised the old chimney breast and have a rangemaster cooker in there. The old kitchen side has patio doors in place of the old back door and a smallish table.

Ours is slightly longer than yours at 6.8m, so not sure if it would feel cramped with island and table. Your drawing looks fab.

LittlePickleHead · 02/09/2023 15:42

@Savemesos not wedded to keeping the chimney breast, I just like the look of the range master in there!

Yes sink is wall E

I played around a bit and added a small utility extension to the LH side to add another cabinet to the RH wall - not sure if this cuts the back off too much? The area where it is is a bit of a dead area at the moment (we have raised decking so it's a small seating area that we rarely use) so I think it makes a better use of space, however does cut off the flow to the garden

No worries, the range does look good in there!

I personally prefer your first design which opens up more to the garden - and let’s in more light.
