Selling without an agent

I am about to put my house on the market and wondered if there was a way of selling without using an agent. If anyone has done this successfully can you please tell me how you achieved it. Every penny counts at the moment and the agents I have spoken to regarding the sale have been wildly overpricing the house or down right pessimistic. Any advice gratefully received, including don’t do it!

Both agents were disappointing in different ways. One was super speedy, the other patronising and dismissive of my concerns regarding banks down valuing, telling me to worry about that when it happened. Why not consider it now and preempt with good pricing?

I have used agents but had my greatest success selling when they couldn't do showings last minute and I did them. Sold twice that way. Buyers were able to ask questions directly and I was able to point out the positives, which are often missed. My experience of agents as a buyer is they often haven't visited the house before, always say they will find out (from seller) when I ask pretty basic questions and charge a lot. They can also do irritating things like put all the lights on before the viewing which always makes me think the house must be dark so I go round switching them off. Quicklister will list on rightmove and zoopla for a small fee, which is all you need. Oh and as for financial and identity checks, they just ask for your details and position to buy. Not much crosschecking going on.
