Home office flooring

Need inspiration. Looking for sound proof and hard wearing flooring that has longevity and is easy to clean.

Redoing our home office and stumped by flooring. The carpet we had before is filthy where feet or slippers/sliders/shoes have been parked under the desk daily for the last 4 or so years, and the carpet is also worn away to nothing where chair legs/wheels have rubbed it many many times daily.

Need something to help mute the sound as well, ideally as it's upstairs.

What flooring do you have in your home office?

Following this as we are currently decorating our office and need new flooring upstairs. Thinking LVT flooring up to now.

RidingMyBike · 31/08/2023 21:07

LVT (Amtico). It's lovely. Looks amazing, easy to care for.

KievLoverTwo · 31/08/2023 21:10

We have engineered wood flooring because it’s a bedroom, and the sound downstairs when he moves his chair is absolutely horrific.

But. Not actually convinced our LL put any soundproofing between floors when she built this house.

Toddler101 · 31/08/2023 22:10

Is LVT going to be quite a noisy flooring though?

If you don't have underfloor heating, I'd go for cork, has great acoustic properties but also warm. Have a look at the Portuguese Treasures website.

JetBlackSteed · 31/08/2023 22:31

I have LVT. Chair moves easily, easy to keep clean, resists spilt coffee. It's also quite warm underfoot compared with tiles. Three years old now and used daily mon-fri by both of us and not a mark on it. Seriously looks as good as new.

That said, my home office is downstairs and and soundproofing upstairs will depend on what is between the floor and ceiling.

RidingMyBike · 31/08/2023 22:34

The chair just glides across the LVT so there isn't any crashing around getting up and down from the desk. And it feels warm under foot - we have UFH but obviously it's not on at the moment.

Ooooh this is an interesting one for further consideration!

Went to a flooring shop today, was told LVT and engineered wood not an option for a single room like a home office and our only option is carpet or vinyl 😭

What reason did they give? That doesn't seem to make any sense. I've a tiny bathroom with LVT, why is a home office room any different?

They said the room size was too small for it 🤔

My bathroom is 2m x 1.9m. Is it smaller than that? I'd go elsewhere and see if you get the same response.

RidingMyBike · 04/09/2023 08:08

Eh? We've got it in our tiny downstairs loo?!

Or is it they can't be bothered to quote and fit for just one room?!

Absolutely do not put a vinyl down!

I had a good thick vinyl put down and within a few weeks, there was a huge circle in the floor where I move around on my chair.

Had to pull the whole thing up and we put down carpet with a chair mat under the chair now.

Pjmasksonrepeat · 04/09/2023 08:27

We just have standard carpet as it's in a bedroom but honestly you can't ever hear the chairs moving about. The only noise we weirdly hear is my husband when he hammers the keyboard typing fast and it knocks against his desk. Sounds like thunder if he's writing an angry enthusiastic email😂

Yes I'm now wondering if this is the real reason.

Room size if 3.1m x 1.7m @ScaredSceptic

Oh dear. Might have to rethink then

I'd recommend cork too. We have something like this.

ScaredSceptic · 04/09/2023 11:09

I can't see any reason why you couldn't have LVT if that's what you'd like. However thinking about it, I would imagine an office chair being moved about on LVT would be far noisier than carpet.

If noise is a primary concern, carpet is probably the best bet. I have an office chair on a carpet with a very short pile and it hasn't done any damage. And as I think a PP mentions, you can get mats which are supposed to protect carpet from office chairs.

Edited

We had hard wearing short pile carpet there before and it wore through.

I have my office upstairs. I have lvt with a rug in the area under my chair. It is actually my chair that squeaks. I need to replace it.

jaundicedoutlook · 05/09/2023 19:14

At the risk of being controversial, we had rubber tiles in our kitchen in one of our old houses and we quite liked them. Don’t recall the manufacturer but they were French, and available in loads of different colours. Thinking about putting them into our garden room when it is built, which we’ll be using as a gym.

I know a lot of people on here seem to like LVT, and we have some Amtico in the guest bathroom, but I think the wood loom versions look a bit off.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/09/2023 19:45

I don't think rubber is a controversial suggestion, it's a lot more environmentally friendly than vinyl or synthetic carpet.
