Tradesman caused a leak… would you expect them to pay?

Much as the title says, we have a carpenter in who has accidentally drilled into a pipe - not one that is hidden in a wall or anything, it’s very visible.

A plumber is now on the way, which I will have to pay out of pocket for.

Would you expect any issue in saying we’ll deduct the cost of the plumber from the agreed overall fee?

A proper trader will have kit to ascertain pipes, use them and take responsibility for accidents. Using their insurance if necessary for something serious.

A chancer / or someone working for a cash job will pass the problem to you or swirl the pot of accountability.

Sorry, just read it's a visible pipe!
Yeah, deduct it from his final payment once the job is done, no hesitation.

yes the carpenter will need to pay

Yes it 100% his negligence, I would deduct it.

I had a handy man over to put some shelves and photos up. He hit our water pipe. The whole wall needed re plastering. I'm still so mad I paid him £50 for putting up 2 shelves and a utensil bar.

Yes this happened to us , it was a hidden pipe, carpenter caused the leak .
He called his plumber friend who fixed the leak they squared it between themselves as was 100% his mistake.

Okay cool, thanks all.

He’s a very nice guy and has apologised and said it was his fault, but didn’t raise the money issue himself.

I’m paying for his work in instalments, I will let him know when I send the final sum that I’ll be deducting for the additional cost and attach the invoice from the plumber. I guess he can then claim it on his own insurance if he needs to.
