New bathroom - polite term for loo for big poos

olderbutwiser · 27/08/2023 15:57

We are refurbing our bathroom. DH has requested the loos will flush a substantial 💩 in one go. Is there a trade/standard/polite term for this kind of loo?

I don't think any modern water saving toilet is capable of this.

If they are, I want to know the make/model so I can install one too!!

TomatoSandwiches · 27/08/2023 15:59

Ask for a toilet with a flush valve.

Hohofortherobbers · 27/08/2023 16:06

Reclaim a toilet from yesteryear? I bet my grandmother's 100 year old toilet is still flushing well, I've had my wc repaired 3 times in 10 years. They're crap these days.

DeathMetalMum · 27/08/2023 16:14

A quick Google suggests the size of the trapway will make a difference to what can fit down.

NormalForNuneaton · 27/08/2023 16:17

Biggest mistake we made was to get rid of our really old toilet.

The new one frequently blocks (a "plumbers bonus" as it's known in the trade)

Thank you @DeathMetalMum , I wanted to avoid the algorithm consequences of googling something like that. Also @TomatoSandwiches .

Seems to me that the cistern size in the old "push down handle" type toilets was more than enough to flush the waste in one go.

I am having new bathrooms and the builder just looked at me in wonder when I asked for the old fashioned type!

Not one to be seen in the four big fat bathroom books I have. I dunno, it is unreal waiting for the "eco" cisterns to refill while I file my nails or look at the chin hairs in the mirror, while hoping the next flush does it! Better to have a big cistern in one go than double the flushes I think, surely the smaller cisterns need a double flush now and then so not much saving of water.

Sorry OP, I don't know the term you are looking for, but I will be watching to see if anyone knows.

DH is a plumbers merchant. Modern loos are designed to save water.

He suggests your DH changes his diet 😂

Ha ha, my builder said similar (in a jokey way) - "don't eat so much Weetabix" lol.

Our new fancy toilet is effectively a poo shelf. I hate it.

Cheeesus · 27/08/2023 16:25

Our last house had toilets that needed multiple flushes, it was awful. Our new ones are fine, and they are new loos.

Maybe you could mention it in a similar way, that you’ve experienced loos that you need to flush several times - presume they are very water efficient, can you avoid that please?

(Adds toilet that can flush big poo to list of things to consider when doing up flat)

You can definitely get ones that have a more powerful flush, I don’t think there’s a specific term for it but a decent plumber will be able to find one. My mum had Crohn’s disease and needed one that flushed really well and they got her a really good one. Incidentally in America they sell their toilets by advertising how powerful the flush is - 😆 - I was watching someone’s Instagram stories yesterday where they were laughing about this walking round an equivalent of b and q in the USA where they had signs like “flushes the equivalent of 8 pool balls in one go!” - and other similar signs. Funny….!

NannyGythaOgg · 27/08/2023 16:35

I had 3 new loos in a new house. All 3 flush fine for me, but I don't produce the kind of excrement that you are talking about.
But 2 of the toilets are great for a good clean flush, the third, a different desion, seems to push the water round the sides but miss the back wall. So I think that, unless you can see them in action, it's a bit of pot luck.
One big hint though, don't get one with a sloping back wall. It is impossible to use this loo without leaving evidence on the back wall. I have an old washing up liquid bottle in this bathroom, filled with water in order to clean the back wall, which of course has to be done immediately before it sets. Using a toilet brush would be disgusting.

SauronsArsehole · 27/08/2023 16:36

Dual flush type loo. The ones that have specific flushes for pee or poop.

mine you do a quick pull of the flush for a pee (half tank used) and hold the flush for a poo (whole tank used)

also look at the cistern capacity with the dual flush. Some are different volumes.

some toilets you can alter the amount of water that is flushed regardless of cistern size

id personally look at reclaimed bathroom set (baths are bigger too) and consider fitting a new dual flush mechanism that you can set yourself. That way you can have the benefit of a big flush for your husbands clearly demon summoning sized deposits and a small one for everyone else to save on your water bill.

You want this. I’ve got one, astounds me how much can go down. Has the bonus of being very quiet:

Not this again.

WholeWorldsPivot · 27/08/2023 16:52

@olderbutwiser I can’t recommend a toilet but… I can recommend a daily drink of kefir. It’s basically fermented milk, packed with live bacteria, it’s an acquired taste but it um… shall we say, breaks everything up nicely into flushable parts? 😬

sweetgingercat · 27/08/2023 17:04

A toilet with a full flush is what our plumber told us to ask for. We went for one by Duravit called starck 3 with a hygiene glaze baked into the toilet to stop things from sticking to the sides (eg scale from hard water). Our old loo had barely flushed and you had to flush it twice to get anything brown down, because water pressure was so poor. Now we’ve sorted the pressure out, the new toilet is magnificent and requires very little cleaning.

I had a Twyford toilet installed during a bathroom refurb 6 years ago. It has a large cistern with a lever handle and rarely needs more that one flush. Downstairs I have a water saving cistern and it is useless. You often need to flush it three times.

The Twyford is ugly but it works very well and refills in about 2 minutes:

Georgyporky · 27/08/2023 17:14

At this very moment, I am on a ship. The loos are vacuum, and are very efficient. It's a shame land-based bogs aren't the same !

I had a Burlington traditional loo in our last house, blocked every time. In this house I’ve fitted an R2 Langford toilet from a local bathroom shop. I only got it because I needed small bathroom fittings. Absolutely fantastic, sounds like an aeroplane flush. It’s so good I’ve ordered one to replace the cloakroom loo which is useless and can’t flush away paper.
