Tips for keeping a home tidy with long work hours

DP and I both work crazy hours in finance (we are both workaholics, love our jobs!)

We rent a small one bedroom flat to save money. It shouldn’t take much cleaning. But it always ends up a shit tip. It’s dusty even though we are hardly home. The dishwasher seems to be forever full. The last thing I want to do after getting a taxi home from work at 1am is to dust the dining table.

If you can afford it would you consider employing a cleaner?

Hello, a tip I picked from a productivity article which has been really working for me is to set a timer for a given time approx 20 mins and just throw yourself into tidying up mode. After 20 mins stop and relax. It’s amazing how much you get done with the a real focus! You then have a choice to stop chores or to start the timer again maybe with a different time.
I think shorts burst of activity is far better than working tirelessly for hours!

I’ve never met a workaholic who isn’t highly competitive deep down.

So use that.

At 1am you set a 10 minute timer…. ready, steady, go! Who has cleaned / tidied the most?

  • cleaner
  • robot hoover
  • flash mop with wipes - Soz environment
  • I have a brush filled with white vinegar and fairy liquid that I scrub the shower glass and tiles with most time I use it
  • assign your partner specific tasks - mine is cleaning wise is responsible for changing beds / washing bedding and towels

Also I spent years in a one bed and it was a mess because we had TOO much stuff we barely used in the space

Have a huge clear out . Store stuff away and rotate seasonally .

Everything needs a place so consider storage options

Everything is easier if the bin is emptied before it's needed.

Cleaner.
And every time you boil the kettle/clear up after a meal - tidy up the place (shouldn't be too difficult if it is only a one bedroom flat).

I like this a lot.
