Cupboard in recess between chimney breast and wall

We are looking to get a cupboard built in the space between a chimney breast and wall. The gap is about approximately 77cm across and we would like a cupboard with shelves fitted above.

Has anyone employed a carpenter to do a job like this recently, and if so, how much did you pay please?

TIA

Very interested in the responses as we are planning to have the same done in our new house!

I paid £650 a few years ago - it was probably double that width with two cupboards. So with those differences and the fact trades costs vary so much with area probably not that helpful- just get a quote, many will probably give one just from a photo and measurements.

Ps MDF (which I painted) was much cheaper than solid wood.

We had quotes a couple of years ago (NW) and it was £3800 for both alcoves - shelves and a built in cupboard at the bottom of each. Much more than we were expecting - think we thought it would be about 1k each but were.wildly wrong. There are companies like diyalcoves that will make them to.measure and you can employ a joiner to fit which works out a bit cheaper.

Thanks everyone. We have been quoted £1200 for this in primed MDF by a local carpenter. We were thinking g it was rather a lot, but looking at your replies I'm now not so sure. We'll get another couple of quotes, but may need to adjust our expectations.

We paid 750 for cupboards both sides and 2 shelves on one side we painted it ourselves.
happy with the style, but the paint does scratch and wear easily.

I was given 3 quotes all about £2500 for two sets of bookshelves.
I did it myself instead for £500 including buying the right tools.
my next bookcase cost less than £100.

I think we paid about £750 for MDF both sides about a decade ago. They look fine painted, but I wish we’d used wood as the house is really old.
