Toning down orange wood quickly

I know I’m being lazy but there are good reasons! I have some tongue and groove type panels which have gained a significant orange tone. I’m thinking of varnishing straight over with a coloured varnish to reduce the tone. Wondering if anyone done this successfully and any tips on varnish you used?

@Handsnotwands thank you - the boards are already varnished (clear)

Yes. You used to be able to varnish mixed to a tone at B&Q, I don’t know whether they still do it. The main problem with over painting ( or waxing) is that you can’t lighten the tone, only darken it or possibly dull it off. Even transparent varnish needs a colourant to change a colour, and it has to lie on top,of the original ( I hope I am explaining this ☹️). Your best best is probably a silver/ grey tone, I think there is one called silver birch which I have used.

IMHO, they would probably look nicer just painted with solid paint in a colour you like. The surface should take a paint okay if primed properly.

Thank you @Allthegoodnamesarechosen all clear! I might test a small area with a silver.

I saw a furniture flipper (so for profit, not durability) scuff and paint over with watered down paint to stop yellow varnish leeching through.
Then they covered it with opaque paint.

@Sgtmajormummy thanks that sounds interesting, will look up, mind you I’m after something quick that’s within my capabilities right now!
