Moving to Cullompton?

Hello, I am just wondering if moving to Cullompton would be a good move? It seems cheaper than much of Devon which has intrigued me - is there a reason for this? Also does anyone know what the secondary schools are like?
Thanks very much

I've never thought of it as being particularly cheap but if it is then its likely because it's pretty isolated - they are building a train station though which is due to open in 2025 I think, buses not great though. It does seem a little run down, shopping isn't great. Cullompton Community College is meant to be okay but have no experience with it.

It's a kind of middle of nowhere nothing place really! Not somewhere you'd aspire to be unless you're from there type of place.

Cully (Cullompton) is definitely a bit more run down than some other areas. But it has got advantages in the closeness to the M5. As other PP says no train station at present & bus services are patchy at best - like most rural/semi-rural areas. There are more desirable locations close by. The town centre has a lot of empty shops - but where doesn't?
Cullompton Community College is rated good, I have heard of a few issues there though. Most people usually try to get into the Uffculme catchment instead.
I live in Wellington, just over the border - it's a great location to get to lots of places, surrounded by countryside, coast & cities aren't far away & lots of attractions on the doorstep.
Where are you moving from?

Cullompton is okay, it's not a horrible place but it's not very inspiring if you know what I mean! If you don't drive then I wouldn't move to Cullompton (or a lot of Devon on that note.)
No experience with the secondary - this looks worrying though https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/boy-11-left-covered-blood-30094461
My DC went to Uffculme originally but I pulled her out in the end due to bullying. Tiverton High was a much better experience.
There is constant traffic in the town centre which is very annoying.

I used to live in Cullompton a long time ago - from 1998 - 2009.
Back then it was quite nice, I do still go back occasionally to visit family and can't help but feel it's gone downhill. It really is in the middle of nowhere though, maybe a good or a bad thing depending on what you are after.
Both my Dc went to the local secondary school and got good results - no issues with bullying or anything, it was a nice school.
I was going to move to Uffculme to ensure my DC got into the secondary but decided against it because lots of people on my estate had bad words about it, lots of stories about drugs there and the school doing nothing about issues.
I do know a couple of people who sent their kids there recently and neither were that impressed to be honest. I wouldn't really recommend Cullompton these days honestly, in terms of other towns nearby I think Wellington in Somerset is nicer or Honiton.

Whattheflipflap · 25/08/2023 15:46

I would honestly be more inclined to go towards Newton abbot that cully if poss

I haven't been to Newton Abbott but did watch a video on it and was uninspired. I'd vote for Honiton in this neck of the woods. Market Town, rail link Exeter to Salisbury to London Waterloo., closer to beaches at Sidmouth, Beer and Lyme Regis.

good96 · 25/08/2023 20:12

Why Cullompton? I think the only real good thing about it is that it is on the M5 and good links to Exeter. Tiverton is a nicer place, and thats the next junction northbound. Tiverton is J27, Cullompton is 28.
Less than 30 mins drive to Exeter, and you can be on the North Devon coast within less than an hour - once the road works have been completed on the A361.

Cullompton is in the middle of nowhere and very much a farming and old Devon family area. There is some tourism in the summer although most people go to bigger areas. Its quite bleak in winter. My ex husband is from there and everyone has known each other for ages. You are called a 'grockle' if you're not local even if you move there to the day you die. I also found most people are pretty racist tbh. There is a massive resentment of grockles buying houses local families can't afford and resentment of tourists.

alwaysonthelookout · 26/08/2023 12:54

I wouldn't move to Cullompton personally - it is very insular and you will likely be viewed as an outsider there (I was when I lived there.)
As the PP said racism is sadly quite common place there, there is a community of Europeans there who I think moved there for the local chicken factory work.
Public transport is not exactly reliable, and the shops aren't great.
