Is Burnley a nice place to live?

Just wondered if anyone lives in Burnley? Any thoughts on the nicest areas, or surrounding villages? Budget is about £500k and we need 3 beds, good schools and a decent garden.

Thank you!

I think Burnley itself is quite a deprived area but there are some nice little villages surrounding it. I know a couple who live in Crawshawbooth which is lovely. You'll get a decent detached house in this area for your money.

Something like this is in your budget living just outside Burnley rather than right in it.

Come to Rawtenstall! Prices have gone up lately, but you'll still get a lot of house for that budget. It's a lovely compact little town, with a good selection of shops and services, and there are good motorway links.

Yes, villages outside is your best option.

Burnley is one of the most deprived areas in the country. Some of the villages around are much nicer. Worsthorne is nice. Do you need to be near Burnley? Id look at Whalley, Clitheroe, Rawtenstall

Some of my family live in and around Burnley. Burnley itself is grim, but there are so many nice villages and towns surrounding it. The scenery is stunning in that area. If you lived just outside you’d get best of both worlds!

550k plus is a fair whack outside her budget. Gorgeous house though. Burnley is pretty grim, definitely look at the surrounding villages.

Don't live in Burnley. Live on the outskirts in a nice town or village - plenty of them

TheCatterall · 25/08/2023 11:00

Hey @TaniaBania like all places it has its nice areas - but many not so nice spots.

I personally wouldn’t live their but that kind of money should get you a nice property on the outskirts.

I live in Colne a bit further down the road which also has a few problems but I have some amazing places on my doorstep and the countryside is 2 minutes walk from my front door.

I run a charity in the small village of Trawden (next to Colne). Google it - it’s super desirable location according to guardian etc.

plenty of other small towns etc I would recommend in the area on the periphery of Burnley. and as others have said Rawtenstall etc is very nice.

there are some location based boards for the north west etc that may have more help.

Preston and surrounding area is probably a better shout

coxesorangepippin · 25/08/2023 14:06

I'm from Burnley. The town itself is awful, but as pp's have said, the surrounding countryside is lovely.

Really spectacular, especially close to Pendle, Ribble valley, forest of bowland.

coxesorangepippin · 25/08/2023 14:10

The thing is, yes the villages are nice etc but you still have to go to supermarkets, etc. You either need to be willing to drive to a nicer area to do your shopping or suck it up and go into town once or twice a week for the supermarket run. Not much in the way orf nice cafes and restaurants in the town itself.

Good schools - are you thinking private or public? The villages around Burnley I.E. Worsthorne, Cliviger etc are lovely for primary school, but the public secondary schools may not be quite as good.

Although people suggesting Rawtenstall (and Crawshawbooth) which are well supplied with supermarkets and there's plenty of pubs/restaurants/cafes around in the surrounding area too.
It's possible in this area to live somewhere with a villagey feel but a short drive to plenty of things.

This is all really helpful- thank you everyone. I'll have a look at the suggestions.
