So I think we need to measure for some furniture so where everything will go. It’s a fairly old /dated house, is it possible to get a carpet company to come meet us to measure up and cost for carpets in some rooms ? Is this something people do?

I guess it's quite stressful to have your buyers come look round time after time. I think you should be able to do what you need in 2 visits.

If they are anything like me it takes a good day of cleaning and sorting to get the house ready for viewings.

Flowersforbees · 25/08/2023 08:24

I think I misread. I'd just wait until you're in to measure for carpets.

JanglyBeads · 25/08/2023 08:24

Yes you could ask to arrange for carpet people to come at one of your viewings.

Quitelikeacatslife · 25/08/2023 08:28

You should be able to get basic carpet costs from floor plan done by agent and then get them to confirm once you are in. It's not your house yet they've sold so now want to be packing etc, you are lucky to get one visit , pack everything in to that. You can't send people round there

GoodVibesHere · 25/08/2023 08:29

No I don't think you can do that. You should wait until you've moved in before getting people in to do any work or measuring up for quotes etc.

Roselilly36 · 25/08/2023 08:31

Measure up for blinds and curtains, measure up for furniture. If you have exchanged get quotes from flooring companies, as often carpets need to be ordered in so you might be without for a few weeks. But unless you have exchanged don’t order anything. Good luck with your move.

SheilaFentiman · 25/08/2023 08:31

Carpet measuring takes a long time. Agree with others re rough costing and book the measuring in for your early days, leaving those rooms as empty as possible.

tenbob · 25/08/2023 08:33

It’s absolutely fine to get quotes from workmen and carpet people before you move in, and much easier to get carpets laid before you’ve got your furniture in, so if you can arrange for it to be done the day you get keys, you’ll be saving yourself a lot of hassle

If you want to decorate, definitely get that done before new carpets go down!

You wait.

Unless you want to be our current buyer (waiting for removals to arrive this morning ingn as finally we are meant to be completing today) who put us through such bother and shit that I had a breakdown.

Wouldn't even exchange til we'd met a list of demands, including another viewing whilst we have had everything up in the air trying to get the flat back up to scratch and sort the painting, everything is in boxes and we've had two disabled kids at home too.

It's been horrid. And prolonged. And their entitlement has been shameful. They knew we were doing work and that no, we couldn't vacate the entire property a week before completion so they could prepare it...

We had to let them view again. But that weekend, I went to my my mum's and I've only come back yesterday ready for today. It's been a year this Sept since we listed, and six since the offer was made on our property.

Don't be that buyer.

Oto · 25/08/2023 08:38

Or this buyer either. Just wait, OP.

Have carpets laid the day you move in?!!!

You don't know what time the owners will get their stuff out on completion day (ours promised noon but didn't clear the property until 3). And then you've got to move all your stuff in. Can't imagine anyone wanting to deal with carpet fitters the same day.

You should leave it until you move in op and you actually own the property. You might even change your mind about what you want when you've been in the property for a while.

I would just wait until in?

I got my house almost two months ago I'm still to change the flooring. It's not urgent.

Also, you need to walk around the house and find out where the squeeky floorboards etc are. I didn't notice until I'd been back to the house multiple times after I got it.

PatTesting · 25/08/2023 09:12

I agree, I had buyers who kept demanding viewings to bring various family members and tradespeople. We got to four visits then I put a stop to it.

Harpings · 25/08/2023 11:58

thanks for all the replies. I should have said that we are scotland so everything is legally binding now and the sellers don’t need to worry about us pulling out. Also the house is sitting empty and it’s in the hands of the solicitors so it’s only the solicitors we are inconveniencing with out visits

Sorry to hear of anyone who has had difficult buyers

I was about to say, I'm moving into an empty house so that's only inconveniencing the agents, and it's their job.

BarrelOfOtters · 25/08/2023 13:31

Ah, we moved into an empty house and did loads of visits as we were going to renovate. The estate agent just sent the office junior with the key and she sort of followed us round.
