Cost of moving internal wall

Hi all. My son has a tiny box room ( think can't even fit a set of drawers, a wardrobe etc.). Years ago we built a cabin bed over the stair head as it wouldn't even fit a normal single bed in there. As he is now approaching teens and is really tall for his age- he is just struggling in this tiny room. He also has a knee condition that can make climbing up and down onto the cabin bed difficult at times. So I've got a quote to move the wall in his room to take about a metre off my bedroom. I've been quoted £1775 for this. Also an extra £400 to build storage unit over the stair head. Does this sound reasonable?

Did they break it down into labour and materials? Are they re-plastering and re-painting? Do they need to move electrics or radiators? Difficult to say, but you don't get much for the price of building works these days. I assume it's not a load bearing wall.

Yes it's all broken down. The current wall is just a stud wall that I believe was previously done by past owner in order to increase size of master ( and the small room absolutely tiny!) So we would just be putting things back as they were I guess.

I did exactly this in Feb 2020. I had no plumbing works needed and the final bill was £1200. £400 for cutom built storage over the stairwell also sounds very reasonable.

How much did you increase the size of the room by if you don't mind me asking? Did it make a decent amount of difference to the smaller room once it was done?

The room was originally 1.75m by 2m. In the picture the old wall ran directly across the end of the bed. It could only fit a bed and a bedside cabinet. The room now measured 1.75m by 3.20m and although it is still narrow it has the length to make it a nice single room. I have had to be creative with furniture, so I have a single divan with storage as it's only the width of a mattress, a wall mounted bedside cabinet, so I can open the divan storage easily, a wall mounted shelf and fold down desk, wall mounted book shelf and large chest of drawers. I also had a high shelf put just above door height around 3 walls. Some of the best money I have spent!

Thank you. My son is so desperate to get this done, sounds like it will definitely be worth the money.

Your quote looks reasonable to me.

Check that you don't need your electric consumer unit upgrading. If it is the old fuse type the electrician may say it is legal requirement to change for latest regs. Builders often sub contract the electric work because of the qualifications needed. You might not find out about expensive upgrade until the electrician gets there
