What would you do with this kitchen?

Hi, We need to redo our kitchen and I think I'm blinded by what is already there and struggling to think of how to lay it out. Any ideas what you'd do? Thanks

What would you do with this kitchen?

I'd go to a couple of kitchen installers and get them to do mockups for you.

Merapi · 19/08/2023 16:50

Do you want a table & chairs in there, a breakfast bar, or maybe some sort of island?

I'm assuming the washing machine & tumble drier would both be in the futility room.

Which of the windows looks out onto a garden? I'd like the sink under that window.

How about a floor-to-ceiling cupboard between the pillar and the door to outside?

I tried Wren... who didn't show up and just tried to keep rebooking us. Ikea just wanted to replicate the current setup and replace the sink etc like for like. Are any of the others any good?

Thank you. No table and chair needed. I'm not sure about breakfast bar or island. Currently there is an island but I often feel it ends up like a roundabout with not quite enough space but that might be the size of it.

The right hand side has the garden.

We definitely need at least one floor to ceiling cupboard as we didn't realise there weren't any until we moved in. Nowhere to put glasses etc!

Thanks

Where is the waste and drainage on your floor plan? It's easier to try and keep those roughly the same. I personally wouldn't put an island in a kitchen like yours, to me they work best in am open plan environment. Otherwise like you find now it's just a roundabout etc......

Allsweep · 19/08/2023 16:58

It's an awkward space with the number of doors and windows.

Friends who have used this design service speak highly of it and I think others on here have used it too - it's purely a design service no selling the products

I'd personally go to an independent. Doesn't mean you are committed to buying from them - you could use the ideas and purchase somewhere else if it was too expensive.

I'd also have all the cupboards go right to the ceiling - no idea why those dusttraps were ever created!

I love an island but I hate perching on stools. Our children were small when we got our kitchen (it's old!!!) so we have a breakfast bar at table height. If I was replacing it I'd do the same again I think.

A peninsula might work better for you?

Aquamarine1029 · 19/08/2023 17:03

What kind of appliances do you want? American refrigerator, dishwasher, washer and dryer, etc. What will be in the utility?

I would absolutely recommend an island of some kind because that's a lot of wasted space. The work space would be invaluable, as well as the storage underneath. I definitely would not have a cooktop or sink in the island, though.

Polik · 19/08/2023 17:06

I'm just decided on island location

What would you do with this kitchen?
Choux · 19/08/2023 17:16

I was thinking like @Polik except she has put the sink in front of the doors to garden. I would pit the sink on the other side of the dishwasher under the window.

Pepper12345 · 19/08/2023 17:25

Have you had a play on diy kitchens? They have a really good app you can plan it out on.

Polik · 19/08/2023 17:48

except she has put the sink in front of the doors to garden

Oh yes, so I did. I thought they were all windows!

KitchenIdeas1 · 19/08/2023 20:00

Thank you all this is really useful. I think I'm going to build a paper model and try moving bits around. We have always had an american fridge freezer but I'm not a huge fan as they take up so much space... but I do like the ice / water maker on the front. Decisions!

The room has too many doors and windows. Is there any way to rework the layout so the utility entrance is elsewhere?

otheriwse knowing what is already there would help.

CatsOnTheChair · 19/08/2023 20:31

Do you need doors to both the hall and diningroom?

I'd go similar to the diagram shown, except don't block the door - so put the sink under the window.
Then I'd put the fridge freeze and a full height larder cupboard along thecwall with the pillar ' order determined by distances.

KitchenIdeas1 · 19/08/2023 20:36

Unfortunately yes to all the doors... The utility is only accessible from the kitchen and the dining room isn't attached to the hall - you go through the kitchen to get to it. There's a big rework planned at some point of upstairs and downstairs but it won't be anytime soon. Bit of a pain but I'm sure we can make it work.

Pepper12345 · 19/08/2023 20:41

Do you have the full floor plan? Or some more info on which if the doors goes where. It might be a great place to use hidden doors within a wall of cabinets to hide how many exits there are if it works with the layout.

Pepper12345 · 19/08/2023 20:44

Ignore me, that info is there when you click on the picture.

junebirthdaygirl · 19/08/2023 21:24

Could you knock the kitchen through to the dining room? Have a nice open space with an island and the table to one end. If there are not as many windows/ doors in the dinning room have the kitchen at that end with your table in front of the double door looking out into the garden. Extra work but better use of space
