Is there much difference between them?

If you could choose between Valspar, Dulux and Good Home, which would you go for? And why?

Assistant in B&Q was raving about how good he thought Good Home was, but his wife preferred Dulux. Never even heard of Valspar before.

Little Greene every time. Beats the others hands down for quality, colours, coverage and finish.

TattoedLady · 18/08/2023 18:26

Good Home is B&Qs own brand so he should be raving about it! It has a very chalky finish on walls and needs a minimum of 2 coats for even coverage. Colours are a lot darker than/don't quite match the colour swatches and I found that it had a lot of little lumps & bumps. It's one of those 'you get what you pay for' products.

Valspar's wood paint (the only type I've used) has a lovely soft sheen and goes on nicely, with good consistency and coverage. Valspar is the European leg of Sherwin Williams paints so good quality. I'd recommend it.

Haven't used Dulux but avoid Crown - terrible consistency, feels rubbery almost and very patchy in my experience.

Colourtrend is my favourite brand - nice consistency and excellent coverage (although not one coat), incredible colour choice and beautiful finish. It's expensive-ish but so worth it.

I’ve just decorated my whole house using wickes own paint. Really great coverage, lovely colours and decent price. I had used a couple of dulux testers and they were awful, very watery and stupid prices.

CountryCob · 18/08/2023 22:35

I quite like wilko but sadly not too available at the moment. Little Greene and Farrow and Ball also feature where justified. Dulux also good and have used Good Home in bathroom which I rated and 2 coats enough - pleasing range of interior wood colours in Good Home which is rare but that needed stiring a lot and a few coats. For me it's all about getting the colour and finish I want and I will mix brands happily, have used most and not a huge deal in it although I would say if money was no object farrow and ball.....

Valspar is now B&Q's own brand so they told me. Awful stuff

UnknownDecisions · 18/08/2023 23:07

We used Dulux trade. It was much better than the non- trade dulux we picked up in B&Q

pinkpirlie · 18/08/2023 23:10

We use trade paint colour matched to whatever colour we want from the expensive brands. Our decorator always wants the trade version.

TetrapanaxRex · 18/08/2023 23:20

Little Greene is the best.

phoolani · 18/08/2023 23:27

I don’t know about those particular brands but I think paint is very much a get what you pay for product, I really see the difference between dulux and farrow & ball for example.

GangleLoper · 18/08/2023 23:35

Those are all budget brands so will be pretty much the same.

The more expensive brands contain higher quality/concentrate of pigments which will give more depth of colour but something like F&B needs more coats but the colour is gorgeous when done.

PriamFarrl · 18/08/2023 23:37

Trade paint all day long.

Go to your local trade place and they will mix the paint to whatever colour you want.

Oleaginus · 18/08/2023 23:46

Piggybacking here to ask for recommendations for a decent brand of kitchen cupboard paint. I'm looking at Rust Oleum currently.

Furries · 19/08/2023 02:51

Little Greene, every time. I’ve gone down the “colour-matching” B&Q type route a few times in the past. Now, I’d rather save and use LG. Also, much better than F&B for the money.

TheFutureIs · 19/08/2023 09:28

Little Greene paint is so good, beautiful colours and is pretty much idiot proof to use

daffodilandtulip · 19/08/2023 09:29

This is what I'll miss wilko for! I guess my decorating habit wasn't enough to keep them open 😂

Globules · 19/08/2023 12:28

Paint now purchased from Brewers. After a long chat with the staff, I decided on Dulux trade.

He and his colleague were of the opinion that all trade paint has a very high standard to reach and for every decorator that tells you F&B is best, another will come along and tell you Little Greene is best. The next two will tell you Dulux and Crown are best.

I took their advice and decided to not pay more for a high end brand name as the difference in quality was so marginal. I'd rather keep the cash.

@Oleaginus We've just used some Rustoleum kitchen cupboard paint and I think it's good. Nice even coverage. About to paint dc's bedroom door with the colour "My Husband Said No" 😀

Theraffarian · 19/08/2023 12:44

I used to be very fond of Wilko paint 😢 I found Homebase own was a good second , however we have now lost those as well , so just took a gamble on Wickes own brand , and the Matt paint was a winner . Only needed one coat to cover a different shade which was a pleasant surprise , and just the right consistency, no splashes from using a roller , but not too thick for brush use . I know some will start at the top end of the market, but I’m all for finding the best at the best price point . I do take note of reviews though , as I saw Wickes white may have had a dodgy batch that was yellow/beige.

BigTedLittleTedCardboardBox · 19/08/2023 13:05

I've just used COAT paint in my bathroom and was really impressed. It was cheaper than having the same colour mixed up at Brewers, which we did with a farrow and ball colour for the other bathroom, and the coverage and finish seems better.

I'm looking at using their paint for the rest of the house now as I like a lot of their colours. Previously used Little Greene and was impressed with them too, but it's a bit more expensive I think.

QueefofSheena · 19/08/2023 13:18

I took part in a trial of Valspar on MN years ago and thought it was awful. I like LG or Dulux trade. I like the look of Coat and Lick but wonder if the price is justified, or if they are just trendy brands at the moment.

Thanks for that, @Nothingbuttheglory

CellophaneFlower · 19/08/2023 14:21

for every decorator that tells you F&B is best

I think you'd be hard pushed to find a decorator that told you this, in fact many will practically refuse to use it as the coverage is so poor!

NashvilleQueen · 19/08/2023 14:31

Another vote for Little Greene

FuzzyPuffling · 19/08/2023 14:47

I'm about to try some Mylands. I have good reports of it, and the sample I painted was very good.

dontchaknow · 19/08/2023 15:45

Bought some Dulux Trade Satinwood QD as advised by a decorator. Worst paint I have ever used, and I've used many. Terrible coverage, impossible to brush out nicely, dries as you are working so it looks like you're painting over dust, only you aren't, it's bobbles of paint. Had to rub down and start over. Found some Autentico Versante (god only knows how old!) in the garage and got decent results.
Will never, ever buy Dulux or any Akko Nobel paint again.
