Dear one and all,

i've asked this before, but everyone has their
own opinion on locations, my Budget £350K with an aim to be mortgage free,

Just be honest am I wasting my time even considering Ramsgate
or is it worth giving it a shot, or would Birchington be a better option

I know margate has a bad reputation, is it that bad?

love to hear from you, im viewing in Birchington tomorrow 17/8/23,
but have seen a really good house in ramsgate Enabling me to be mortgage free!!

kind regards to you all,
Chris

Birchington is far more pricey than Ramsgate or Margate so Im not sure I understand part of your question.

reddevilchris2018 · 16/08/2023 19:15

well ive seen properties at £325k in ramsgate , and some in Birchington

given a choice should I be considering or avoiding Ramsgate completely

Ramsgate over Margate any day. Be aware though, OP, Mumsnet thinks anywhere in Thanet is beyond the pale.

I don't really know Birchington well but it's more expensive than either R or M.

Where is the Ramsgate house you've seen?

reddevilchris2018 · 16/08/2023 19:25

Hello there

it's within half a mile of the royal harbour
nearer to he side of the ramsgate tunnels.

any advice would be appreciated
regards
chris

I'd be very happy to give you advice OP, but this is about the 5th thread you've started about moving to Kent coast in the last 12 months...can you be a bit more specific about what you actually want to know?

What would you like to get out of this move (besides being mortgage free)? Do you have kids? What are you into - art, music, sports? Do you want cultural stuff or are you more interested in the outdoors, for example? What do you do for a living - eg do you need easy access to London?

What road is the Ramsgate house on? I live here so happy to advise on areas etc, if that's what you're after!

MoonieDoo · 16/08/2023 19:41

What about Westgate-on-Sea?

reddevilchris2018 · 16/08/2023 19:43

hello

sorry about the repeating the thread, , was due to move to birchington
last year but due to various health issues the move got postponed sadly

the move hopefully back on track this time, need to be near shops for my mum as shes 76, and is coming with me as part of the whole move, needs to be near the doctors too

somewhere to be able to go out and just relax. somewhwre to enjoy a good meal etc

it's about starting a new chapter in some ways, nothing overly dramatic

ps- - no children

regards chris

Namechanged as don’t want my location linked to my other threads - it’s a very small village! Smile

I live in Monkton so very near the towns you’re looking at (there’s nothing here though!)

Minster is lovely, as is St Nicholas at Wade. I like Birchington and Westgate also. Would steer clear of Margate as while it’s improving, it’s still a little too ‘rough around the edges’ for me in some areas.

Ramsgate for me would depend on the location. Sea front area is generally quite nice but I would give the inner areas (Newington etc) a swerve!

SatelliteStomper · 16/08/2023 19:59

Ok, well if you're bringing your elderly mum with you then I think Ramsgate or Birchington are much better bets than Margate. They are both more relaxed, quieter and probably cater more for an older generation than Margate (obviously I'm making the assumption that your mum isn't a 76-year-old club kid!)

I'm not sure what the shops are like in Birchington. If you are over towards the tunnels it's a straightforward walk along the cliffs to Ramsgate town centre, which is a bit run down but has the basics (Boots, banks, cafes, Waitrose etc) or it's a bus ride / short car journey to Westwood Cross shopping centre which has M&S and all the supermarkets.

Plenty of places to eat and drink, plus you are within easy reach of Broadstairs / Margate for an even wider choice. George VI and Ellington Parks are also both lovely and have cafes.

Unfortunately GP services aren't stellar in Thanet generally but we didn't have any issue getting registered when we moved here 2 years ago. Getting an actual appointment is another matter but that's not a problem that's specific to here!

All of Thanet has its pockets of deprivation and rough areas, but we have a really nice, laidback life in Ramsgate and don't regret moving here for a moment.

HTH

Agree that Newington is to be avoided!

WingingIt101 · 16/08/2023 20:23

My 86 year old gran lives in Margate (has been there/Thanet for 40 years now!) and whilst it's definitely rougher around the edges than ramsgate / birchington / westgate / minster / broadstairs (more expensive but lovely) she has a really good set up for an older lady - she's 10 minutes from Westwood cross so can get a bus / cab easily to the shops for a potter around, and really near the hospital which she likes to joke is ideal for a pensioner!

Like anywhere I think you can only go house by house - what's that specific street / area like and the house for you to actually live in

00100001 · 16/08/2023 20:40

Ramsgate is nice.and definitely on the up.

Greenwitchhorse · 20/08/2023 08:34

I just bought a house in Deal, Kent. Have you thought about it? lovely, quiet little town with a nice high street and a weekly market on Saturdays. Older demographics than Margate/Ramsgate.

Broadstairs is nice too.

I spend a lot of time in Margate (as I am interested in art/music and there is a lot going on there) and I think it is a really interesting place. Ramsgate is improving as well and I loved the sea front/port there.

Folkestone is another seaside town that has got better and has a lot going for it.

I'm a local too, just back from a bike ride along the prom. Lots of different things to do in Thanet, really depends on your interests. Lovely cinema in Westgate, next to a great tea room.

Great for walking along the various proms too

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 21/08/2023 13:07

I’m looking same areas lower budget, not so keen on Ramsgate - I still have to commute to london once a week so it’s a consideration. I love Birchington it would be my first choice but as someone said up thread don’t forget Westgate. Also if I wasn’t going into London I’d definitely go beyond Thanet and look at Deal/Sandgate etc

Greenwitchhorse · 25/08/2023 07:39

@HangerLaneGyratorySystem

' Also if I wasn’t going into London I’d definitely go beyond Thanet and look at Deal/Sandgate etc'

There is a fast train from Deal to London (gets to Kings Cross and Stratford) that takes about 1.20 minutes so perfectly doable once a week.

London to Sandgate takes about 50 minute.

I am in Deal and still have a London job.

Marmighty · 25/08/2023 07:42

Westgate is a lovely little town

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 25/08/2023 07:53

@Greenwitchhorse I’ll check that out thanks.

seasideoap · 31/08/2023 11:04

Are you still looking in the area? Loads of properties not selling in our area. Also, be aware of the on/off Manston reopening. It's been quite the saga......
