Belfast sink not mounted properly? Horrible filthy impossible to clean bit - pic attached.

My kitchen has a Belfast sink - which I love because it's huge and I can wash big things in it without sloshing water everywhere like I used to at my old place.
But - it is mounted flush to the units below, which practically means that because it curves at the bottom there is a bit which catches dirt and is almost impossible to clean at all, certainly impossible to get properly clean.

I've seen other Belfast sinks mounted so that they hang over the edge of the unit below - is mine done wrong?
It's also not fixed at all - it just sits there and is only attached via the plumbing. There is not silicone under the work surface, so water can slop over the edge and get into the cupboard below if I'm not careful. Is that normal?

I hasten to add - the sink came with the house, I'm not responsible for putting it in this way 🙈Apologies for the somewhat grotty picture...

Unless you can get someone to refit it I think your best option would be white silicone build it up in layers and use masking tape to get straight line

At the front? I find silicone tends to be a dirt magnet in itself. Oh dear.
I am planning to redo kitchen at some point, and I would like to keep the sink because I like using it - but want to fit it properly. Is sticking over the edge the right way to do it? And should it be fixed down in some way and siliconed to the underside of the worktop?

I reckon it wasn't always like that.... you say it's not fixed with anything but the plumbing; are you sure it hasn't got pushed back? My friend's was the same and would move it you lent on it!

Interesting, I will investigate that idea!

It looks to be not supported adequately, judging by the splits in the panel the sink sits on.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/08/2023 21:21

I think what looks like splits is just the way the unit below is constructed. It's been like this since I moved here 6 years ago and seems solid, just annoyingly dirty in the corners in front.

For safety and hygiene, I would get that refitted. Belfast sinks are very heavy, and if water is getting in under and around that sink, it will rot the unit underneath. The way it is currently fitted, there are enough gaps to catch dirt and water but not enough space for you to clean/dry them.

Well, whaddya know - I pulled it and it moved forwards about 2cm so it looks better. I'm not overly keen on spending money to get it fixed when I want to change it all soonish.
