Commercial dishwasher at home?

Has anyone installed a commercial dishwasher at their home? Their super fast cycles are appealing but I don’t know how practical they are in other ways.
Obviously they are designed to be used umpteen times per day so clear cutlery and crockery are readily available but do they have space for pots and pans and the usual domestic kitchenware?

Not practical for home the reason they are so fast with 3and 4 minutes cycles is they are already full of water that’s heated up to temperature
uses the same water for next loads
you have to have them running all day
many need a 3 phase electric supply as they instantly heat the water for rinsing
detergent is normally auto dosed and you buy it in big containers
normally gravity drain they don’t have a drain pump

Two dishwashers are better, if you have space.

I remember seeing this here so when we replaced the kitchen, we added a dishwasher there & kept the other one in the garage where it was already.

Doormatnomore · 13/08/2023 19:50

Not practical at all but my dream is to have professional appliances in my kitchen. The domestic ones don’t compare. I even want a massive deep sink.

DyslexicPoster · 13/08/2023 19:53

I think I'd rather have two. A normal size a nd streamline one side by side. But we are a bigger family by most standards

Sexnotgender · 13/08/2023 20:06

Do you mean the big ones that you pull down and they work in like 3 minutes?

Englishrosegarden · 13/08/2023 20:14

Commercial dishwashers do not clean very well. They use high heat and the same water over and over to wash the dishes. You have to drain and clean them at the end of each day. They use sanitiser to clean the dishes in the dirty water. Oh and they don't clean tea/coffee stains and you need to rinse everything thoroughly or else the bits just float around in the dirty water. I have one in a cafe I own and I certainly wouldn't use one at home.

BreadInCaptivity · 13/08/2023 20:14

We have 2 drawer dishwashers that take up the same space as a normal one.

It's brilliant.

No more taking things out and washing manually because the dishwasher isn't full yet - yet the capacity in total is bigger than my previous standard dishwasher.

Fantastic when we have guests - can get one dishwasher going already from pre-dinner drinks/starters/cooking pots etc, use the other for cleaning main course - by which time the first is finished, can be unloaded and used to finish off the rest.

I'll never go back to a single dishwasher again.

Example below but ours is integrated and just looks like 2 kitchen drawers.

A commercial machine wouldnt work most poeple have listed the points but also you have to clean off everything before putting through.

And the steam when you open them....... Unless you have mega extraction in your kitchen you can expect a lot of condensation usually leading to mould...

You can get professional versions of a home dishwasher now but they are about £5k.... Use a lot of power to get to temperature so that they are fast and they open the door a bit themselves at the end of a cycle to let steam out so that they dry faster......

@BreadInCaptivity May I ask the make of your dushwasher? You can PM if you'd rather not post publicly but I am intrigued.... Might 'need' one 😉🤣

@BreadInCaptivity I am next week signing off on a new kitchen - had my heart set in the F and P drawer dishwasher but my v grand kitchen designer says the integrated ones show wear (because of the steam?) and she would not let me add one . I thought I had got over it but seeing your post made me question again. Do you mind sharing - How long have you had yours and do the wood fronts get warped or anything?

@iwantabreakfastpantry sorry for hijacking the post a bit but the answer might help all of us!

5 years.

Bespoke painted wooden units.

No wear whatsoever.

No issue with steam.

Think your designer is talking rubbish based on my experience.

FrazzledHippy · 13/08/2023 21:58

I work in a kitchen, if you saw what I see in our dishwasher you wouldn't want a commercial one at home. Also, they cost £££ to run

Newhousename · 13/08/2023 22:09

@BreadInCaptivity thank you soo much. Just time to change it. So grateful !!

BreadInCaptivity · 13/08/2023 22:09

No wear whatsoever

To caveat - not from the dishwasher anyway!

We are going to get the units repainted next year but that's just from daily wear and tear.

They are certainly not warped or in anyway more "worn" than the rest of the kitchen.

They take a lot of time and energy to heat up, and afaik they tend to make the floor wet - but on the other hand, I have no idea why domestic dishwashers are SO slow by comparison. Surely there is a middle way!?

iwantabreakfastpantry · 13/08/2023 22:37

Thanks so much for the info about commercial dishwashers - that’s an easy one to cross of my list, which I needed. Every time I think I have made a decision, something else comes along so this is a relief.
Our current plan is a slimline for the week day dishes - mainly breakfast and dinner things. Batch cooking means we don’t have pots and pans and lots of other bits to wash during the week days and so it take three days to accumulate a full load. However, during this time we have often hand washed bits and piece.
During the weekends or when entertaining we can use the normal size d/washer.

The reason home dishwashers are super slow is because they are ridiculously efficient in water and energy.

Just echoing the above posts.... Commercial ones are replacing a huge labour cost for quick fire use, time is money, so they can afford to be expensive to run.
Some things work really well to have commercial versions though, just not dishwashers!
