Renting property w cracked windows

Anyone renting right now knows how mental the market is. Was about to sign on a new rental property but went over for the second time to measure up today and noticed two cracks in the windows plus the windows upstairs are so old they don’t seal. Surely this isn’t a good thing during winter? Do I accept this and sign or is this a red flag?

it’s a grade II cottage so is v old. Single glazing etc. I have a 1 yo DD so panicking a bit.

If you really love the house ask if the landlord will get the windows fixed before you move in. It will be cold in winter anyway with single glazing but looks like there are shutters which will help.

Have you lived with single glazing before? I had a flat with it and life was miserably cold in the winter.

I haven’t no @PragmaticWench - was it really that bad? I noticed this property is EPC D so not tooooo awful. But more concerned as I have a baby now so don’t want her feeling the cold. Reckon it’ll make the bills higher with single glazing?

It looks grim. Is that mould on the inside window or just cracked/ peeling paint? I would be worried about the glass shattering. I would ask landlord repair the panes before agreeing to rent.

You need to get it reported so you are not accused of causing the damage.
We now have triple glazed windows & cannot believe the difference it has made, even from double.
So yes, it will make a difference to the heat retention.

@Babyroobs i agree! It looked like a really nice house in the pics and on the first viewing, I then went back today once all the furniture was out and felt a bit cat fished. I flagged the windows and the landlord has said if I want them doing I can pay for them myself… as she doesn’t think it’s an issue. With the Lettings market being the way it is right now I think landlords think they can do the bare minimum bc there’ll always be someone who will accept. Unfortunately my DD’s dad left and stopped paying his half of the rent, so we are having to leave the family home we are renting and there are no issues like these at all. So it’s a hard pill to swallow tbh!

Also imho surely landlords shouldn’t rent out properties with cracked windows and refuse to fix. It’s a safety hazard surely!?
