How do I remove or hide fake/decorative brick wall...

I just bought a 1930 house. It is in good condition but at some point a previous owner put in the living room one of these decorative brick walls that was ''fashionable'' in the 80s...I hate it and want it gone with a passion.

But it looks like it could be a pain to remove. As anyone ever dealt with something similar? was it tricky an expensive to do?

Would an alternative be to keep the wall but board (if that is the right term) it to hide the ugly brick behind?

You could plasterboard it and then paint over it?

I reckon you could test a small bit of the wall to see if it is actually built of stone or just covered in it. I would try to wedge one of the stones out with a bolster and chisel but avoid the arch as that might be structural.

Yes I think that might be the easiest option.

@Geneticsbunny I am going to get a few quotes from builders. I am also concerned about disrupting the ceiling as this is a 1930 house & there might be asbestos in the artex...

Headache!

No need to board, just get it plastered.

PS, give it plenty of time to dry out before you paint, old stone can retain a lot of moisture.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen

Thank you for the advice. I am feeling a bit more hopeful after reading that there are ways to deal with this over than knocking the wall down...

Are those full bricks or brick slips? Might make a difference to the moisture retaining aspect.

We plastered over something similar. Turned out fine
