Why does outside wall of house look like this?

The external wall isn't straight down to the ground, it goes inward about 6 inches then down. It's like this all the way round.

Is there a reason for this feature? I hadn't noticed it on other houses before. Could it cause issues with things, like if I wanted to install a temporary structure adjoining the house? Thanks for any comments.

What sort of property is it? Built as a house or a conversion? How old?

CatherinedeBourgh · 10/08/2023 15:05

Has it been externally insulated?

Diyextension · 10/08/2023 15:17

Its got external insulation on the walls and it stops short of the dpc.

Rorrimrorrim · 10/08/2023 16:15

It's a house built in the 70s. Oh yes I read that the previous owners got insulation put in, so that's what it is? Nothing to be concerned about?

Not unless you dont like insulation,🙂. The council have done quite a few near me. It looks a bit odd if next door is not done on a semi. And they have not done a great job of making it look neat round the windows.

but no nothing to worry about.

I'll need to have a look at next door then. Good to know it's nothing to be concerned about. I've been puzzling over this for ages and couldn't see any info online so thanks!

If it's just the pebbledash/roughcast/render, you should not take those things right down to the ground. If you do, you'll get problems with damp.
If it's external insulation, I don't know. But I'd imagine the same applies.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/08/2023 10:33

It's to stop damp. My 1930s house has similar.

Rorrimrorrim · 12/08/2023 10:42

I'm assuming now that it's external insulation as the previous owners paperwork said it had been done. But I'd only seen insulation where it's been infected into the wall before and you can see where it's been done. I won't be touching it but I'm looking to get an animal run added to my house and wasn't sure if there would be issues (I'll need to block off escape routes though due to the way it goes inwards).

Injected not infected!

I’m surprised they have a pebble dash render as that is heavy.
Be careful, or don’t, drill into it.

Rorrimrorrim · 12/08/2023 22:34

Thanks for the advice, I have no idea about these things.

Oh thanks, I have seen other houses like that before now I remember.
