Ignore awful living room - help with paint themes

We have a huge fireplace that is currently white, the walls are a stone sort of grey. I do like the grey on the walls but I want a Change. I want the fireplace painted but don't know what colour to go with ?
The walls are all getting replastered soon, i may repaint the walls the same grey, it's a long living room that is quite dark so need a lighter colour but I think white will be too much.

What colour would you paint the fireplace if you were me ?

We're in the middle of having it all done up so that's why it looks a shithole

I'm allergic to grey. I paint most rooms green. If a room is quite dark I prefer to do quite a saturated colour. What direction does the room face?

paintadvicefor · 10/08/2023 13:06

It faces nw, we have large patio doors that the sun beams through at the end of the day, but up the other end it's very dark especially on a cloudy day !

Thing is our kitchen is green, and it's open plan so I don't want it to clash, I do like green though !

Anyone got any ideas ?

It's hard to give ideas based on the photos. But I usually decide by looking thinks up on Pinterest and also using the dulux visualiser app to find colours that complement each other.

You need to take photos standing further back, it’s impossible to tell the shape and scale of the room. What colour green is the kitchen? You say it’s open plan, so is this space part of what we are looking at?

I have an east facing room (so same light situation, just opposite ends of the day) and some grey furniture and sofas. I've just painted using Dulux Overtly Olive which is much softer and somewhat lighter than it's name suggests. The room looks much nicer in the afternoon dim period (your morning), looks really nice under lamp/electric light, and doesn't blind you with brightness in the lightest part of the day (my morning, your evening).

I've got dulux overtly olive on two walls in my living room too, with a neutral on the other two.

If your kitchen is green and it is open plan, a different, complementary shade of green would work. What shade of green is your kitchen?
(I can't see anything in the pics btw)

Greens are definitely on the rise again and I reckon it's cos it's a good colour to help us in the transition away from all the greys of the last few years.

NeedToKnow101 · 12/08/2023 13:50

Not grey!

trulyunruly01 · 12/08/2023 16:41

No, we must get away from the grey.
Trouble is, many people will have invested good money in sofas and furniture to indulge the grey. Times being what they are, we have to find colours that will still look ok.
My sofas are silver grey, and I have the Cotswold Grand dresser in grey at one end of the room, neither of which I'm in a position to replace. I repainted, changed lamps, lost the copper-look accessories (replaced with antique gold) and had new curtains (took a deep breath and went floral). Room looks totally different, for under £200.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/08/2023 16:43

Can you take some more pictures from further back? It's very hard to see what we are looking at and how it works with the rest of the room.

AlwaysFreezing · 12/08/2023 16:43

I'm currently obsessed with sulking room pink, but in valspar paint. Could look great with the green, depending on the shade.

Upload more pics of both rooms?

ApolloandDaphne · 12/08/2023 16:44

On the whole though I would paint the fireplace and your walls all one colour. That colour would categorically not be grey.
