Getting Rid of Wasp Nest

Soapboxqueen · 09/08/2023 09:42

We have a wasp nest in the outside wall of our house. Wasps are going down the crack between the flagstones of the side path and the wall of the house.

In my area we can pay the council to have the nest treated but obviously there are private companies too.

So my question is, is there any benefit to paying more for a private company (don't know if there is differences in chemicals used or techniques) or is it just a case of they'll all do the same thing anyway. TIA

If it's at ground level, and you feel confident, then it's very easy to use a can of nest destroyer or powder to completely coat the entrance to the nest, preferably at night when they are inactive.

Leave it for a couple of days to check there's no more activity - if there is retreat until the nest is dead. Then seal the gap.

Are they posing a risk to your or your family?

We had one in June a few years ago. Pest control guy said to leave it. They would abandon it in a month or two and it could be safely removed then. Also they don't always return to the same place each year.

He was reluctant to treat it because he said numbers are down and it's becoming a bit of a concern.

If it is bothering you then get whoever is fastest and cheapest. I have had several over the years. Local guy charges about 40.00 and comes over within a day or two. I would imagine you will wait a while for the council. If they get inside the wall they may find their way into the house.

I had a small one, about grapefruit size in a container I had.

They were getting in through a vent. If I had been smarter I would have just waited until the day when a lot of them were out and blocked off the hole, then then the ones coming back wouldn't have been able to get in and the ones inside would have died.

Tbh it's mostly the neighbours who are bothered by it as it's next to their back door.

So I'd rather get it sorted.

I am concerned about them coming in the house though I'm not sure if they could from where they are but this is why I don't feel comfortable doing it myself.

Thanks for the info though

Then I would sort it quickly with a ring to a local company. We had one on the side of our house and their were loads of wasps on my neighbours back garden. I had someone out the next day as they could not use their garden safely.

I think if they were going to come into the house they would have done it far earlier than now. They start being active around April or May so to suddenly chose to be inside someone's house shortly before they are about to do the off would be a bit strange.
