Saving on furniture costs

Hello,

Do you know of furniture renting options or where to get second hand furniture for cheap?

Am considering renting (ideally furnished property) but if not available I was thinking it might be feasible to rent the furniture as well while am at it. But it might be too expensive.

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I'm unsure about renting furniture, but I just helped a family member move into an unfurnished flat - we did Facebook market place and local charity shops to furnish it, cost 1/5 of the price and when she moves on she can sell it again 😊

Facebook market place was really useful and lots of local items, but obviously depends on what's on offer near you!

Hi OP,

It might be worth checking out Freecyle. I haven't used it in a while but when I did, you could put in requests for what you wanted (I managed to get a free 32 inch TV):

I'd always offer something (clothes, books etc.), every time I requested anything.

Ikea Circular Hub might be worth a look too:

To mirror a pp, weve just had to start again from scratch for reasons I dont want to go into here. We put a collective request around friends to check garages, lofts ect and let us know if there were any bits they wanted to get rid off, we would come and collect. We also did FB marketplace and the BHF and YMCA furniture shop. Weve managed to kit the whole house out for a few hundred pounds. The charity shops are excellent value and will deliver for between 25-35 pounds. Well worth the look plus you are recycling and supporting charities.

Excellent suggestions! Haven't thought of Facebook's marketplace, even though I used it to sell small items! Duh!
What charity shops do you mean? Are there specific ones dedicated to furniture?

Just to add Gumtree and eBay to your list!

We got a gorgeous free sofa on Gumtree, and dining table and corner sofa were eBay bargains.

If you struggle to find stuff locally, you can courier surprisingly cheaply from further afield. I did this for a specific G Plan dining table and chairs that I wanted :)

FB marketplace is great for good-as new stuff - we got a £30 bed that had been in the spare room, was basically unused! Super comfy.

I honestly think if you are good at research and not too picky you can furnish somewhere very cheaply - it's less hassle than ongoing rental payments, and you can re-sell when you move on (or donate to charity if in a rush).

Best of luck.

In a biggish town or city, charity shops often have depots.

Your local -not rip off - junk dealer/ small scale/non-showy-but-decent antiques dealer

Local recycle initiatives

All these= more likely to yield decent well-made furniture than cheapo plastic-based new stuff

Our local AGE Uk sells furniture cheap, they deliver for around £5 an item. When we first moved back to the UK after living abroad we got all our sofas etc from there. In our local town the BHF also has a very good furniture shop.

If you can transport furniture, I would recommend a physical auction. We went to one a few years ago and you could get a three piece suite (a nice one) for a fiver. No one bought it and it got given to charity.

BHF are good for when you want to move out and get rid of your furniture - if it's in good condition, they'll take it off your hands:

I know, am sick and tired of just compiling stuff, I'd love to go minimalist.
One issue I might have is with transporting the furniture, but I'll find a solution.
