Have I painted my skirting boards wrong?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the process of decorating. My skirting boards were yellow because they had previously been painted in oil based gloss.

I sanded them down and used a b&q primer and undercoat on them before applying a coat of dulux satinwood. However I've read somewhere that previously painted wood only needs sanding and it doesn't need undercoating or priming.

Now im thinking that I've done it all wrong? The skirting does look fine but I want it to be hard-wearing and I don't want the paint peeling off.

I was thinking of giving it a second coat of satinwood anyway. Should I sand before applying the second coat?

Any advice will be appreciated as I still have a lot of woodwork left to do.

Thanks.

Sounds like you've prepped well by sanding the old gloss, so it should be fine. Perhaps you could have skipped the undercoat, but it certainly is not goning to do any harm. I don't think you need to sand before the second coat of Dulux, unless the are some notable defects on the first coat like drips, excessive brush strokes, etc.

Woodwork that you’ve done, just give it another topcoat.

Woodwork left to do, I probably would apply a primer/undercoat and then one topcoat.
