Is this toilet salvageable? Bleach won't cut it...

I've just bought a BTL that hasn't been looked after very well by the previous occupants. I'm just in the process of cleaning it up, redecorating etc before I look for tenants. The bathroom is actually quite nice and new so I don't want to replace anything, but nothing I've put down the toilet has got rid of the stains! I don't think it has ever been cleaned Envy
What can I try??

Is it limescale?

Whattheladybirdsaidnext · 31/07/2023 20:40

Try limescale remover.

chocolateisavegetable · 31/07/2023 20:40

Have you tried Coke?

TheDuchessOfMN · 31/07/2023 20:41

Have you tried the black harpic? Nothing else works

Topseyt123 · 31/07/2023 20:41

Spirit of Salt. It is pure hydrochloric acid and has rescued a couple of toilets in tenanted properties for me, when I really thought I would have to buy a new toilet.

Don't let it mix with any other cleaning products, and ensure the room is as well ventilated as possible.

dillwithit · 31/07/2023 20:42

Try the black harpic bleach - worked wonders when I had the same issue.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 31/07/2023 20:42

The Harpic 100% limescale remover usually does the job.
Leave it for six hours and then scrub like mad.
Repeat as necessary.

caringcarer · 31/07/2023 20:42

Harpic black bottle 100 percent limescale remover. Plus Harpic toilet tablets. Put 2 tablets down the toilet. Squirt the bottle of Harpic around and under rim and around tip of bowl. Let it drip down. Leave for an hour. Use brush to clean. Flush repeat. Leave tablets and Harpic CV leaner in/on overnight. Brush and flush.

This. You won't even need to scrub.

Mooselaurels · 31/07/2023 21:04

Black harpic overnight every night has rescued a few toilets for me.

BrassicaBabe · 31/07/2023 21:11

Gloves on. Empty the water with a sponge. Then use the responses above when it's dry or near enough 👍

mouse70 · 31/07/2023 21:14

Citric acid overnight

GrannieD · 31/07/2023 21:18

Sharp knife or a screwdriver in my case and just gently scrape the edge then lift. Should come away in a big chunk. It reeks tho so cover your nose !

BerryGoodPuddingSir · 31/07/2023 21:19

As above empty out the water, I also use a sponge. It means the Black bottle Harpic won't get diluted. I come back to scrub it and leave it again. Keep doing this periodically until all the limescale is gone.

BerryGoodPuddingSir · 31/07/2023 21:20

@BaconLettuceTomato and gloves, always wear gloves and crack a window. It doesn't smell great but it will work.

TheShellBeach · 31/07/2023 21:20

Spirits of salts.
There are no lavatory stains with which this cannot cope.

Howmanysleepsnow · 31/07/2023 21:21

Drain unblocker! I literally just discovered this. Use in the same way you’d use bleach (ie let it run down the bowl) and sit for half an hour then flush. No need to scrub either!

Lennybenny · 31/07/2023 21:23

Spirits of salt as previously mentioned.

Push the water down with the toilet brush, add the liquid, if you can...cover the basin area with cling film so none of the fumes escape too much, lid and seat down if not and leave overnight, the fumes do all the work.

Don't put on anything metal! The fumes stink and they aren't good for you so avoid them and don't breathe in!

This stuff will remove it if it's black with limescale!

Jeannieofthelamp · 31/07/2023 21:24

100% spirit of salt. It's serious stuff but it works wonders.

bellsbuss · 31/07/2023 21:36

Black harpic, the toilet in our guest en-suite hasn't been used since Christmas. Went in there to wipe it down and put towels in and noticed the pan was really discoloured. Put thick bleach down , did nothing , bought black harpic and it's like new again

Ohpleeeease · 31/07/2023 21:47

Definitely salvageable. Push the water in the bowl down the loo with a mop or plunger, so you can properly clean it. Black Harpic for a few hours then scrub. Flush then add thick bleach and leave for ages.

KievLoverTwo · 31/07/2023 23:02

Probably hard limescale causing a build up of muck. Try to drain all the water out. Fill with full fat Coke past the dirt. Leave overnight. Should eat all the limescale away.

A plumber recommended I soak terrible shower heads in cheap beer and that worked too. Massive shower head, upside down in a wok of cheap beer, left overnight, repeated, all the limescale disappeared.

A pumice stone has sorted a couple of toilets for me.
