Garden reno how much??

We completed our house renovation last year and now I'm thinking about the garden. We need a new patio and turf laid as well as some flower borders dug but no plants. How much have you recently spent on garden projects? Have prices doubled like building work has?

We are north London area and is medium sized suburban garden.

I read recently that you should expect to pay as much for a full garden reno as you would for a new kitchen. I assume that includes a designer, hard landscaping etc, but yes, it's very expensive. I just want a border clearing and a shed base and even that is looking a lot more than I expected!

Depends what you want the patio to be too I imagine. Some of those slabs are pricy, but look lovely.

Lawn area will probably need to be properly levelled before turf can be laid and borders dug.

We got quoted about £10k to do something similar 😱

Which - needless to say - we didn't go ahead with!

We just paid someone £900 to clear and level it and it a currently under a tarp until it's time to put turf down, which feels like it might - just about - be within my skill level!

I was recently quoted £3k for design and £20-30k for landscaping and planting. London.

We just paid 9k for something very similar. Worth it, as it looks great & we’re using it lots.

It would be insane to pay as much for a garden rejig as for a new kitchen! Unless you are getting a digger and having landscaping done??

I would find a builder to quote to lay paving stones, source them yourself.

I have laid turf myself twice and it was fine! I had only had a garden for about six months so was hardly green fingered. Lawn was destroyed by building works. We stamped it flat and poked holes with garden forks for aeration (or something- copied YouTube!) and then literally laid down turf bought online and delivered. Possibly had to gently push it down? You'll find instructions online. The main thing was watering it like mad while it settled in.

We stupidly had to do it a second time as lawn got destroyed once more by different building works 🙄

And as for plants for the beds! Do you want to pay someone to design them or can you just pick yourself?
I bet you'd get good advice on here for the conditions in your garden if you start a seperate thread and describe what you're after (low maintenance etc?).

I think a builder sounds a good idea as we really just need a new patio to start with. I don't have £10K left for a landscaper! Thanks to everyone who replied.

Honestly, a silly amount, and it is not yet finished. I think like an interior renovation the sky is the limit with gardens.

South London:

Just paid £670 to have a weedy 30sqm cleared, levelled, then turf laid. And another £220 for them to repoint the patio.

Two guys did it all in one day.

The other quote I got was £1500 just for the lawn!

Get a few quotes - we had the front garden done recently (S London) and one of the quotes was close to £5K. I actually paid under £2K to remove some bushes and previous paving and put down new.

Thanks that sounds really good.

I’ve got my numbers wrong, it was £990 total. Full time professional gardener + a labourer he often hires. Found from local Facebook page.

I would be very happy with 1k to get a nice new lawn @MongoFrogman
