Moving to Pembrokeshire

We currently live in London, mid 30s. Wanting to start a family soon. DH can work remotely, and I’m in the process of landing a fully remote role.

I used to holiday in Pembrokeshire every year, as my roots are in the county. But no surviving family here. I grew up in Cornwall so it’s very similar, but still affordable.

Has anyone made this move? I know it’s a big difference.

I have a family member near Haverfordwest. They say its a bit backward - but has some beautiful coast scenery. Overall they would prefer to return to civilization but can't afford to. Pembrokeshire does have a good sized English population so it's less unwelcoming of foreigners in general. Big drug problems in the town. Rains a lot. Takes ages to get anywhere. But it is cheap.

Where do you want to move to? The costal towns are more expensive and heaving in the summer (although apparently not as busy as Cornwall).
I grew up around St David’s. It’s beautiful. My nephews are having a happy childhood. But it’s an awfully long way from anywhere else.

Our family live there, and we were thinking of moving back but ultimately decided not to.

we were tempted to love because we could get some lovely houses for a much better price than where we live now. Also the local area is beautiful with womderful
beaches. we were looking at Haverfordwest Area.

One thing that put us off is that job market isn’t great there, and it is quite a long way to any major cities, so if your work from home opportunities end we were concerned about availability of alternative jobs. Have you checked to see what jobs are available for your industries there or are you guaranteed work from home across the next decade or so?

I found it really boring and isolating. Although I love it for holidays.

BranchGold · 28/07/2023 20:04

It’s a beautiful part of the country.

Be mindful of hospitals. You’re both young and hopefully in good health, but have you considered maternity care/logistics of areas and how far from a hospital?

Its really, really different to living in London. I know that might be staying the obvious, but things like a supermarket being a drive away, shops closed at 4pm on a Sunday and 10pm during the week. No Uber, no food delivery services, minimal public transport etc.

Have you explored education options?

I would do round Powys Hay on Wye - Hereford. More going on. Obviously no sea though.

Schools are bad, hospitals worse. It's beautiful but I'll never never move back

Try further towards Swansea way that way your still connected to reasonably City services but still within easy reach of beautiful places to make the most of. The public transport system, shops closing times, and general fac5 that everything takes longer would be a big shock to the system to readjust to after London but I reckon worth it for the childhood upbringing.

My family originate from there and I spent my childhood holidays there. As my auntie said, if you take away the beaches, what is there to do there really?

I used to live just outside Tenby and was pleased to leave. Takes ages to get anywhere. Very limited shops.
