Is pigletJohn on here still or anyone who knows about plumbing?

This bathroom tap is leaking. You push it out to turn it on and towards the middle to turn it off. If you push it hard towards the middle and hold it then it doesn’t leak so it’s currently tied up with a dressing gown cord - stylish! I can get the top off (and undo the screw) but I don’t know if I need to undo the nut you can see in the picture - it is very stiff and so I don’t want to force it undone if it won’t help solve the problem. Btw the water is off!

Anyone got any ideas what to do next? Thanks

Theres a video half way down but it says to unscrew the plastic shroud to lift the cartridge out. Still waiting for DH to buy the replacement cartridge for ours, it’s been dripping for weeks, unless we press it the right way.

If you have the money a replacement tap is the easiest option. You can find a decent one for £20 to £30 and lots of ‘how to’ videos on YouTube.

In what way is full on pluming in a new tap easier than changing a mixer tap cartridge?

GroutScrubberExtraordinaire · 27/07/2023 15:14

Yeah, it'll be the cartridge I think. It's easy enough to change (or has been every time Ilve done it) but the trick is getting the right cartridge.

if you know the make/model of the tap then there are online searches that can point you to the correct cartridge easily enough.

Otherwise, it's a case of taking the told one out and to a trade seller who could help you - or trying to match it up online and keeping your fingers crossed.

In all honesty the time taken to do either is probably comparable. Putting in a whole new tap is usually just a case of undoing the two hoses at the back, undoing the retaining nut and then lifting the thing out before putting the new one in. 20 mins job or thereabouts. Replacing the washer / cartridge in a tap going to take you about the same sort of time. I got a whole new kitchen tap from ebay for 13 quid a couple of years ago, so not as crazy a suggestion as it might sound. Bit like is it worth repairing an old TV when you can get a new one for the same amount…

To answer the OP, it’s likely a case of undoing that nut yes. Hard to see completely, but if leaking then the washer / seal will likely be under there. Looks like maybe another metal ring above though - does that move / come off? Can’t imagine that is going to cost more than 20 quid to replace the whole thing if you do break it so I’d have at it…

That is very wasteful. Have you not heard of the climate crisis? Look it up.

Thanks everyone, I’ll try changing the cartridge first and then go from there.
