Do polyfilled areas need to be primed before painting?

Hi everyone,

A few months ago I had a room resplastered. The plasterer didn't do a great job. We also then had to get some extra power points installed. The electrician filled the holes but the repair patches were still visible on the wall (they looked a different colour to the plaster). I then went over the whole room and filled in any holes/uneven surfaces with polyfilla. I've also sanded it with a fine sand paper so the walls feel nice and smooth.

My issue is that although it all feels smooth I can still see visible repair patches in the plaster. We are going to be mist coat all the walls before we paint them but do I need to prime the repair patches before I do this?

The room is going to be painted in an off white colour and I don't want any of the patches to be visible after I've done this.

I'm going to be using valspar contract matt for the mist coat and dulux trade matt for the top coat.

Any advice would be appreciated.

In my experience with normal matt paint I have used, no.

In fact if I have a bit of wall surface that will not take paint, I normally put a thin layer of filler on it, sand it back and use that as a "primer".

I find that sometimes some fillers leave the first coat of paint looking a bit shiny just where the filler is, but subsequent coats look fine. If it looks a bit obvious after the Valspar mist coat, you could just do an extra first coat of the Dulux on the filled bits before doing the full first coat. (Depending on the colour change, I'd be expecting to do 2 coats of Dulux on the whole wall after the Valspar anyway, though, so you might get away with not doing that.)
