Random sockets question

Help me settle a debate with DH! Doing a renovation and the electrician has put one double socket on the wall for our wall mounted tv. Do you reckon that's enough? Or do we need another double socket?

I think we will need one socket for the tv and maybe one for an arial (we don't have one on the roof) although he watches live tv once in a blue moon. The switch can be used in our snug room and once the kids are older the play room will be a teenage hang out room with a tv no doubt so I think we would be plugging in a games console occasionally.

We've never had any extra sound equipment for any of our tvs so can't imagine we will start now.

Any thoughts? Getting an extra socket would. Either involve getting electrician out again or retrofitting at second fix stage

Don't think aerials require a power supply.

You're right! Maybe that helps...

Do you use Apple TV or a Sky box, they need sockets, I think Roku and Firestick do to

Oh I thought no power for those, but yes looks like you do

An internal booster aerial needs a socket but most fire sticks can be powered from the TV (if its modernish) via a usb.

It's very simple to fit a 2nd socket side by side especially at 1st fix but with modern tvs a double socket is usually enough unless you want surround sound/consoles etc

DP (electrician) has said he'd always recommend two double sockets plus aerial point for a tv in case of multiple plug in items eg fire stick.

I use about 5 sockets for my tv so I would want another one 😂 just realistically think if you'd need anymore or could you suffice with an extension lead as a one off if you wanted to plug in games console etc? We actually have an extension lead on the wall for our wall mounted tv but it's nicely hidden just above our floating shelf with games console in front of it.

Sounds like dh wins! Will have to call electrician tomorrow...

What are you wanting lots of sockets on the wall behind the tv for? You need a single socket, though I installed a double just in case. You then chase a hole in the wall to run your hdmi and other such plugs in and plug all the power in down at floor level. Regs don’t permit tv cable to be run in wall for fire reasons though in reality I have done in one room for some 15 years now without problem.

if you have a cavity wall it’s really easy to do this, no need for tradesman. You just cut a small hole in the plasterboard which will be hidden by the tv and then the same again at floor level. You feed all the cables down from the top other than the power supply for the tv which you plug into your wall socket. If you have solid walls this is a little more complicated as you’d need to chase out the wall, or you just put up with the slightly less ‘pro’ looking solution of conduit.

The above should read the tv power cable not the tv cable. You can run as many hdmi and aerial cables as you want in the wall.

just another thought is that your route behind a cavity wall can sometimes be scuppered by noggins for the walls so you’d need to work that out first before punching holes in wall.

You can get a plastic box with a lid and a five way extension in the bottom, so that all your plugs and wires/cables are neatly out of the way. I've just sorted this at my parents house as they had loads of visible wires and now it looks much better.

This is the one we used -
