How do I stop this £@!**^%^ gate banging?!

Live next door to an Airbnb. Which is annoying enough, but something that drives me insane is that their gate swings and bangs in the wind. I work at home and it makes me jump constantly.

We're in a terrace, where each house has a small yard. The owners seem to prefer to leave the gate open, so that their rubbish company can easily access the yard to collect the rubbish that they leave strewn all over the floor to attract rats.

I did have the owner's number but he seems to have blocked me after I asked him to deal with a smoke alarm that was going off for 12 hours.

Sometimes holidaymakers get fed up and push the bin up against the gate. Sometimes my partner climbs over the wall to do the same thing, but we really don't want to be trespassing on someone's property!

What can I do? It's so minor, yet so annoying. A huge crash, smash and bang when I'm trying to concentrate. It's a large, heavy, 6ft tall gate, so it really makes a loud noise.

Steal the gate.

I would look at putting a rubber stopper on it ,

missbunnyrabbit · 24/07/2023 10:25

Unscrew the gate and leave it against the wall. If they can't be bothered shutting it, I bet they can't be bothered screwing it back on.

I would LOVE to unscrew the gate!

But a rubber stopper might be more subtle and practical, cheers @stevalnamechanger

Add a big spring in with the rubber stopper and you get a slow mo movement

Ps if removing the gate remember to bring a big wood drill to expand the holes so that even if they go to screw it back up they need to spend at least another day of quiet searching for bigger screws

@AnSolas You are an absolute savage and I respect that

A gate latch that can be opened from both sides. Eg

Tie it up with a bit of string?
If it is the right type of gate, you can make a loop out of the string and just hook it over part of the gate and the gatepost, so that it can be easily opened, as well as fixed.

I made a string loop for my neighbour's gate that did this and made me want to kill then

Luckily for them they moved before I was forced into violence and the new people have a dog so fixed the gate.

So this was my first thought – or thin rope. There's only a couple of inches of gatepost over the adjacent wall so I'm not sure whether it would stay in place. Or even maybe a bungee cord.

Really appreciate all the ideas because it's driving me nuts and I hate them. They don't live in the area, so don't give a shit about all the small anti-social things they do/allow, such as this and the rat/rubbish problem.

Why thank you😁!

Report them for the rat issue.

AutumnCrow · 24/07/2023 11:12

Yes - grass them up to environmental health and housing standards at the Council. Go large, girl.

Maddy70 · 24/07/2023 11:37

Ask them to put a self closing spring on.
